Full bowl - so?
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:01:55 AM »

Every single morning, without fail, my cat will do that. Wake up with me, meow and meow, as I go to make my coffee, meowing at me to get her some food.

I look at her, every single day, say the same thing, in a groggy tone, "You have food, leave me alone."

Yesterday, I caught her drinking out of the toilet. I thought, maybe the kids, hadn't filled her water dish. You know how kids are, they want a kitten, beg you for it, to keep it. Promise they'll clean the catbox every day, feed it, and then after awhile, you're cleaning the catbox, making sure the cat is fed and has water, cause they get irresponsible... Anyway, so I kicked her off the toilet. Wonder why she would drink out of the toilet. Doesnt she know what goes in there? She has to cause her catbox is in the downstairs bathroom. And when I go in there, to go to the bathroom, she pushes the door open, and then goes in the box and does her business. So I have to be interrupted while doing my business, and watch her do hers, at the same time. Its annoying. Why she does that. So she has to know, we all do our business in there. So why would she want to drink out of that same place. That is nasty.

Every morning, I have to repeat this, to my cat. "You have food, leave me alone." In the kitchen, not the bathroom. She'll rub on the refrigerator. Ill open it, she'll try to get in it, meowing. Ill get my foot and push her out of the fridge, tell her again "You have food, go eat it. Shut-uppppp...." Half asleep...

Then she'll meow and meow, weave through my legs some more. Ill walk out of the kitchen, and sure enough, ill hear her eating. The crunchy-crunch of Friskies between her little jaws. She knew she had food. Ill roll my eyes, wondering why she has to do this every morning to me. Torture me with her begging.

What it boils down to, is she's tired of eating the same thing. Ill get her something else on occasion. Cats love tuna, so of course she'll devour that. We too, get tired of eating the same thing. So we go to the fridge and pester spirit. We see the opening - that little opening, and the light in the fridge shows, we dive in and try to snatch something else to eat, while spirit says "You have food, there's your bowl." We look up at spirit and say, "Ive been eating that crap for a long time. I know you've got some leftover ribs, maybe tuna salad, milk, maybe even a brewskie in the back. Hand it over." Then eventually after meowing over and over, spirit will finally say "All right! Just so you'll stop meowing!" Go grab a can opener and open a can of tuna.

We gotta aim for the fridge instead of the toilet. If we're gonna seek out more food. And be persistent. Thats just the way it is.

Now shes sitting down as I write, cleaning herself. I didnt give her the tuna today. I might tomorrow. Depends what mood im in when I wake up. But I think she was trying to teach me a little lesson for the day.

This is really normal for kitties.
If you have a routine, then they want to be part of it, and get what they can from you while they can (because they know you're leaving). In her case ... it might be attention more than actual food.

Nonetheless, with all my cats, I've seen this kind of fussing about the food bowl even after I've fed them something I know they love. We all come to the feeding area again, so I oblige .. I bend down, and play with their kibble. Or I pet them them and flatter them while they're having a bite.

It's the ritual, more than the food.

She has dubbed thee "mom".

Put the lid on the toilet and make sure she has fresh water --- not in a plastic bowl, but in a ceramic or tin bowl.

She's a very pretty cat ... she wants your communion.

Oh yeah ... that washing/cleaning herself is all part of the ritual.
See, when they're little ones with their mom,  they all go feed off of mom, and then ... mom cleans them up, especially their little hinies. Mom must do this for the first 4 or 5 weeks, because there's a membrane there that she's washing off .. if she didn't do this, they would die from not being able to eliminate.  So it becomes a built-in response to the feeding: they come, feed, with their little tails up, in anticipation of mom's clean-up.

That's why when a cat is coming to be fed, you often see their tails up in the air. As they become adults, they clean up afterwards, not just because they might have gotten "dirty" during the feed, but because this is a repeat of the experience of "mom".

Long story short, it's an act of trust on her part that she's washing up around you. You're her mom.  Warm, purring fuzzies....

I should go run and pee, right now. Ill report back if she goes in there, hang on...
