There are two types of spiritual people I wish to speak out against.
1. Saccharin Spiritual types.
These really get up my nose. They delight in waxing lyrical and vacuous. They speak in wonderful words about the sublime experiences and what not, what rot. It appears they are in admiration due to a peculiar life situation in which they have manoeuvred themselves out of reality - they no longer get their hands dirty. They don’t struggle for a living, they don’t work in menial jobs, they don’t do their own cleaning, they don’t have to wash shit off the bottoms of young and old. They are free to live a refined and disassociated existence in which vacuous words don value.
Wherever you find these types - give them a wide birth.
2. Flamboyantly Dark Spiritual types.
Such people have little attraction for those who made reasonable progress on the Path, but they have extraordinary attraction for those who are beginning. Enclosed within is the dark secret: the pseudo-seriousness of one who knows terrible things but will nonetheless deign to help another over the threshold of knowledge. They are full of bullshit.
They sit in their rooms conjuring fantastic images of themselves, drawn from all the books on shamans and witches. They delight is seeking out the darkest conspiracies of the spiritual cannon. Then they escalate themselves to the position of knowledgeable ones regarding those dark secrets. They love to create veiled corridors of entrance for others, before they will vouchsafe this arcane membership. Finally it all comes to nothing.
3. Unwitting accomplices who should know better.
There comes a point on the Path, where we have done good homework, studied the commentaries, and find ourselves ready to dive silently into the deep end .. yet we dally. We realise the path ahead is solitary, but we haven’t cooked all our human seeds - we still seek company. Unfortunately we are at that stage where mundane, subway-crowd company will not suffice. We at least want to chat about all the great ideas we have filled our heads with for many years.
Thus we fall back upon the above two groups. Those who offer platitudes without effort, and those who offer secrets without effort. Just for the sake of being with seemingly like-minded people. Do we realise the damage we do?
Real spiritual groups are extremely hard to enter, and once left, are impossible to find again. The only way to resolve all these issues is to stop. Go inward.
Stop pretending, stop declaiming, stop teaching, stop bullshitting. Stop everything and focus as a being alone before eternity.
