I began to read in depth about her today. She was an American street photographer, b.1926 - d.2009. The astonishing thing about her is that during her life, she did not even get prints of most of her work, which numbered in the 100-thousands. After her death, the contents of her storage unit, where her negatives and rolls of undeveloped film were stacked in boxes, were bought in an auction by a collector, who then brought her to the public eye. Though she began to use color in the 70's, the majority of her work was shot in black and white, and so many of the photos were stunning. Her biography and story are still being researched and unraveled.

Navigation-wise, when you slide back to the first slide, change street-1 to street-2 in the url, to see more.

Her New York street photos look so familiar to me. She took a lot in the section called the "Bowery", through which I rode several times as a child. That was part of my dark legacy. She captured it well, and it's rather unnerving that she routinely walked through that area.

I'll need to wait until I have a better internet connection - next week hopefully.

Her self-portraits were also very cool.

So, she did more than US street. She travelled to Asia obviously. She does have a great eye.

And France, Yemen, Israel, VietNam, Canada, and a host of "unlabeled" photo-locations. I'm sure there are many more from Asia (only 3 or 4 more are on the site), but the curator really has his hands full. Plus, as might be expected, obscure relatives have come out of the woodwork claiming rightful ownership -- so really we are lucky to see whatever has been posted online.

I've been thinking about her a lot. I understand her privacy-need, but I don't understand how she could have left so much undeveloped. Myself, I need to see what I've done - visually. I'm not just talking about photos. Could be any pursuit. In commentary about her, it is stated that she had complete confidence in her composition - that most of what she took, she took in one stroke. Perhaps she simply didn't need the feedback and echo of continuity.
She is a mystery.
