"I remember when my daddy and uncles came home from the war
The look in their eyes made their voices more tender than before.
And every time I wanted stuff we could not afford
Daddy said something that you don't hear anymore.
He said, 'The best things in life are free
A home cooked supper with your family
Son feel the love between you and me.'
He said, 'you don't need to find a money tree
Don't go wasting all your energy
I swear, the best things in life are free.'
Daddy painted houses with his brothers all day long.
They talked of old war buddies, sometimes sang old songs.
Could've hired helpers to move the work along.
They could've made a lot more money
Could've made the business strong.
But he said, 'the best things in life are free
Nothing wrong with living modestly
Son feel the love between you and me.'
He said, 'you don't need to shake the money tree.
Don't go wasting all your energy
I swear, the best things in life are free."
Now we live in modern times.
Daddy's day is gone.
Everybody stays so busy
Just keep on keepin' on.
And money is the tyrant king
We're all its pawns.
You don't hear anybody singing daddy's song.
He said, 'the best things in life are free
Your reputation and your honesty
Son feel the love between you and me..."
