Title: Playing for change
Post by: tangerine dream on December 13, 2008, 09:21:51 AM
Playing For Change

Ever since he heard some street musicians outside a Subway station move some 200-odd passerbys to tears, Mark Johnson has been thinking up a way to shine more light on the transformative power of music. After ten years, this Grammy winning filmmaker has got something. Something remarkable, actually: bringing together musicians from around the world -- blues singers in a waterlogged New Orleans, chamber groups in Moscow, a South African choir -- to collaborate on songs familiar and new, in the effort to foster a new, greater understanding of our commonality. As part of 'Playing for Change', this is moving remix of the popular 'Stand By Me' performed by more than 100 musicians from Tibet to Zimbabwe!

Was unaware on the first listen that the opening guitarist, David Broza, is very famous in Israel, and that Larry has 2 cd's by him, the sneaky devil. (World music is not L's beat.) I suspect that a couple of the other African singers on this video are also not neophytes to being recorded.

And should you watch it again, notice that there is a guest ghost...

I just watched the PBS documentary, "Playing for Change," which I just might try to procure.

What a lit-up character he was! It was nice, the splicing of him in there.

On the documentary I watched yesterday, the local PBS channel had Mark Johnson there live, with many segments of an interview. Mark Johnson had a little story about the opening singer in "Stand By Me," Roger Ridley, who has since passed.  Johnson said he was in Santa Monica, about 2 blocks away from where Roger was singing, and heard his robust projection from 2 blocks away.  One of the first things he asked Roger was how in the world he hadn't been snagged by some recording company, so awesome he was.

Roger replied, "Well, I'm not in any 'business', Mark, except the Joy Business!"  I loved that.

Kirina is a village of musicians in Mali, the elders of whom can trace their ancestry back 75 generations.

The Playing for Change Foundation is building a music school there.

This one isn't a favorite of what they have done - but it does have cut-in footage of Bob Marley singing.  He was a true believer and a force, I now see in retrospect, and I wish I had paid him more attention while he was living.

Thank you for bringing this one up.
I have been ignoring the e-mails from playing for change quite a long time but this is really good.

I agree, it is a new try in the series to incorporate old videos.

However, in this case, it was old Bob Marley that after alll created the song/lyrics of the Redemption
Song.

First release in 1980 on the album Uprising.

There are a couple of instruments I don't recognize in the above - like the one at 1:39.
There's also a Japanese stringed instrument being played by an interesting implement:  maybe the implement is standard fare - I've just never seen it before.
Title: Re: Playing for change
Post by: Michael on April 24, 2011, 09:01:44 PM
That's nicely done, but I feel they added too many instruments into it, some of which you can't hear but can see. I would have preferred they had more of less musicians.

I've seen the Japanese stringed instrument played extremely well once - he was a stunning player, who really created the wild atmosphere of a storm. Haven't seen those swinging things the woman played, nor could hear their sound.

Yes, either that or a longer track, where more of them could be featured!

La Tiera Del Olvido

Translation

Land of the Lost/Forgotten/Confused

As the moon shines
at night the roads,
like leaves in the wind
as the sun repels the cold.
As the earth to rain,
as the sea awaits the river,
well I hope your return
to the land of forgetfulness

As wrecked my fears
If you are navigating your eyes.
As my senses alert
love your voice.
With your child's smile
as I move the soul
as I lose sleep,
calm as I steal

You have the key to my heart,
I love you
more than my life because without your love
I die. ca / repeat

This song was played to death - at nightclubs and on the radio - back in the 70's and 80's. I thought I'd never want to hear it again! But this version by PFC is quite exuberant, so I thought I'd share.
