Just tried something I saw on the Food Channel.
I was sauteing some onions for the hash browns I was making, and when they got warmed up, I sprinkled a tablespoon of suger over them, and continued on with the cooking. Made for a very nice flavor and caramelization.

Yes, chefs all over the globe are using that as a side now, similar to relish or chutney.
