Nothing but dragonflies fill the skies
neither bird nor butterfly nor moth
they command the skies
swirling round and round
playfully to and fro
existing in a mortal's time
on the air of immortality.
The small know it all
as they gaze upon us
with bright illumination
kindling our brightest hopes
our dreams, and know our sorrows.
Spinning through the clouds,
then falling back toward earth
never reaching the ground
but touching the lake
and sparkles of dew
on the luscious leaves
to quench their thirst.
All things are born and then die
but dragonflies are immortal
continually coming and going,
one after another they swarm
in and out of mind's eye
teasing with their angelic wings.
I watch them dance before me
reminding me I have more time
to dance myself on land or air
whichever I choose to do,
I can go wherever I want to go
if I ride their wings
to the edge of infinity.
