We do have a piece like this, but it more like our band's music than my own. It is best listened to on good headphones, where you get the separation and discreteness so it sounds like you are underwater in a huge fish tank, with all kinds of strange fish floating past. But I would never have the shaker so loud - shaker is such a dominant sound, I end up pushing it further back in the mix.

BTW, I think it is a shaker played with an impact sound, which the South Americans tend not to do - they make it slide back and forth. When you play shakers with that impact sound, you have a problem getting the attack to line up rhythmically, because the attack on a shaker is delayed from hand action, so you have to play the sound rather than the instrument. I find it difficult to get right, thus on my current piece I have cheated and lined it up in Pro Tools after recording.
