The most valuable object

There is a Hasidic song that tells a story. One day God made an angel who, like every other angel, had his own particular job to do. The angel was sent to our world in order to bring back the most valuable object in all creation. He could not return without it.
First, the angel retrieved the most beautiful jewel anywhere on Earth. This was promptly rejected. Next, the angel discovered a horrifying yet moving scene. A soldier had thrown himself upon a bomb to save the lives of his comrades. The angel brought home a drop of the soldier’s spilled blood. This time, the angel was very close to completing the task, but he learned that he needed to find something even more precious than the noble soldier’s blood.
Searching again, the angel encountered a troubled man who had lost his way and made the wrong choices, and who was now rapt in anguished yearning to reconnect with God. After capturing one of the man’s tears and returning, the angel learned he had succeeded–that to Heaven, this was the most precious item on Earth.

Easy to see how that Jewish theme crossed into Christianity.
