There are more versions - I just picked 3 of the acclaimed ones. Prokofiev allegedly heard Horowitz perform it, and gave his nod to Horowitz's version.

It requires a lot of fire and intensity to play this. It is also known as the "War Sonata". Of these 3, I'd vote for Pollini's version, but my head is spinning so that is subject to change.

I'll tell you one thing. All pianists should be allowed to remove their jackets before playing this piece.  :)

It sounds like a technical practice sequence. Too autistic for my tastes, but athletic nonetheless.

The more I listen to it, I can hear his intent to make it war-like: one side responding to (and against) the other.
