this is interesting jahn.
I haven't had time to get to all these you have put up, but I chose enigma as I like their stuff, although strangely I didn't like the first piece which made their name many years ago.
they are still somewhat cliche, yet I confess, they have something, and it is something I miss so much in music these days, so i'm willing to pay them. the piece I put up some time ago somewhere in Soma is still one of my favourites - I was listening again last night.
the video. well strange about that. i wasn't so fond of it, yet i did think it miles ahead of the pack. I am a little sensitive on this as I am just nearly finished my own first music/video piece - in fact maybe tonight if i can stay awake long enough.
you see, I have not been attracted to the visual gimmickry. Xero and Tio both do this very well, but it's not been my thing. I prefer the quality in the content alone, and yet, I will explore the effects, as I have done in music, but in my own way again.
return to the source, return to innocence... i was sorry they could not have used imagery itself instead of reverse sequences. Varanasi is renown for being built on the 'reverse' flow of the river ganga - that is a huge thing in hinduism, where the river turns around, and flows back in the direction of its source. So I am keen on the power of imagery.
The music and words - I don't know who the main musician is of this group, but he is a very interesting man. You see I am of the opinion that we are moving into a new world of music, where it comes with a visual - not a 'clip', which is just an add on for TV, but visuals in the same way movie directors use music - musicians now should begin to use visuals as an integral part of the music, and the best are doing just this.
However, the audience needs to catch up. YouTube's quality is abysmal, as is the sound once it has been multiplexed with the visual. perhaps HD will solve much of this technical limitations, if the world lasts that long. Also I fear the ears of a whole generation have been permanently damaged by the MP3 format - they simply don't know of the experience of quality sound, as it impacts on the body. I have reluctantly accepted the earphone as a standard audio vehicle, but for god's sake, why can't they spend some cash on quality earphones? I suggest Beyer - excellent value for money, if you can't afford the expensive gear.
as you can see, this has been on my mind a lot lately.
anyway, thanks for the link and words.
pS when will those frigging watermarks go away! I'm glad i don't own a plasma screen.
