Salsa

I have been slowly watching this film that nichi put up in Films. I am not so keen on the theme of the 'young greenhorn amongst the old hands' style of movie - Crossroads did a similar thing and there were others all around some skill.

But like in Crossroads, there is some great content if you just skip the greenhorn stuff. In this film Salsa, there is excellent 'context' that is what I call the 'mood' of a dance style. You can watch the Salsa championships, but this film does show much more of the cultural atmosphere that is critical to understanding where a dance style comes from.

The 'dance as: the vertical expression of a horizontal desire' as Bernard Shaw once said, is highly visible in this movie - it's not about 'dirty dancing', but more about a culture's natural familiarity with sexuality and sensuality - and it comes out naturally in their dance.

The movements of the hips is very well demonstrated, plus the whole vibe of salsa. Cuban music is one of my favourites.
