God Bless the Child
« on: November 09, 2015, 06:10:04 PM »
Written by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog

Them that's got shall have
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Money, you've got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When you're gone, spending ends
They don't come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

He just don't worry 'bout nothin'
'Cause he's got his own
Not here, not there, but everywhere - always right before your eyes.

(I've never been into Billie, and oddly, her version is my least favorite. Odd, because it's her song.)

OK, fascinating thread. Firstly, I understand why you like your preferred selection. But from my take, what I hear is the difficulty with the meaning of the song. In every clip except Billie's, when it gets to the words, "That's got his own." there is a subtle yet distinctive avoidance. My view is that all the other words are understandable - the singer can get behind those - but at the precise moment of the critical words of the song, no one except Billie knows what it means, and thus they can't come in powerfully behind them.

The words speak of wealth - monetary wealth. But at the point of these critical words, the meaning of wealth changes dramatically - what is she talking about? Oh, I'm sure everyone has an idea about it, and yet having an idea is not the same as knowing intimately. Knowing from the bottom of your soul. Every singer has found their public voice through the good-auspices of a person in position of power, and they project that framework if you listen carefully. Billie is centred. Yes, so are some of the others, but no where near as much as Billie.

There is a tone in her voice which says, 'I sing because I sing'. All the others are singing for an audience.

To me, this song is Billie's song, even more than any other I have heard her sing. The others are singing a great song, as great singers or musicians, but only she is singing the song of her soul. She sings this song as if she is completely alone.

I think it could always be said that the writer of a song has the best chance of owning it and conveying it.

Then ... there are performers like Bob Dylan, who was sorely lacking in music vocally: I can't think of any of his tunes which weren't better conveyed by other artists - except for, perhaps, "Like a Rolling Stone."

A lot of people love and appreciate Billie Holiday. They seem to understand her, and sympathize with her. I've tried many times over the years to like her, but it seems a lifelong condition: her timbre just doesn't hit my ear. I can glean what you're saying, that she "sings because she sings", and that she is centered. She just doesn't pass through me. I mean that process wherein your body is a filter for your spirit and your soul: it could be your entire being, or your own diaphragm, your vocal chords, or your ear, or your heart. A singer's performance must seep through that filter.  This process becomes a highly personal one, and an either-or situation: the voice either does or doesn't reach through.

There are many singers who I do like, who do seep through me, who are not 'heard' or appreciated by others. It's one of those things I just accept.

I was drawn to this song through a television program I watched. It ended with a performance of this song by two of the characters, and I was very touched by it. I actually hoped to find that performance on youtube, but had no success, and stumbled into these others instead.

The premise of the plot was that an adult male character, who had been raised by his grandmother, had been told all his life by the grandmother that his mother was dead. Out of the clear blue, he received a phone call from his mother, who told him she was in the hospital and dying. He was making the trip to go see her, but she died before he got there. He was then counseled by his friends, who walked him through the process of giving to himself the things he needed to hear from her.

Meanwhile, the grandmother, with whom he was furious for lying to him, explained her position to friends: that raising her grandson was her chance to make good on her failure with his mother. She believed that telling him his mother died was less painful for him than having him comprehend that his mother abandoned him for a wild life of drinking and drugging.

In the end, the adult male and the grandmother reconcile, and sing this song together. What I hear in this song is only superficially about material wealth. The money is a metaphor, for the sustenance and stability we receive from our families of origin - which in the end, we must give to ourselves. We must "get our own."
