Lifehouse - Broken
« on: December 21, 2022, 12:13:08 PM »
Back in the day when I did talk to the BIL I remembered he loved this group.

He is not wrong. They are very good.

Now they are "technically" a Christian group. However, I really consider Lifehouse spiritual. I actually do like quite a bit of Christian music. If it is not super preachy and heavy, but kinda like this? Spiritual and uplifting? Then im on it!

Like Danny Gokey, or Lauren Diagle - great artists who have beautiful music. I could listen to them for hours on end.

But this one I posted in SIR tonight. I thought of many who have come in group for those loved ones lost. Or really, are "they" lost and the loved ones ok?

This is a good one:

Here is my take on this music. Firstly, it's well done - nicely recorded, mixed and the voice is clear yet with colour. The video is attractive, though expensive. Words seem good, but that's where my thoughts come in.

These kind of songs, which I see so many young people attracted to, and that includes Taylor Swift's material, come under what we used to call singer-songwriter back in the days of James Taylor. The market moved away from this back then, in the 80s, as people became fed up with 'songs about me'. The market moved from introvert to extrovert. But the thing also about those singer-songwriter songs is that they were simple, with little production effects.

What I'm seeing now is a return to the impulse of those singer-songwriter, with two major differences.
Firstly, although this is a return to introverted, 'songs about me', there is a significant difference - this new wave has a depressive-anxiety context, 'struggle for the light' themes. That wasn't there back in the 70s - people were emotional but with far more optimism and delight at the world's possibilities. There is something dark being reflected in this new wave of material, speaks of some heavy forces at work in the world.

Secondly, this music is no longer simple - it is highly produced, in fact, too often over-produced. That is odd, because although they are introverted, personal songs, they are top-level commercial productions. That causes a strange internal confusion, about what is really happening - whose soul is on parade.

See this is probably why Taylor Swift does have a huge fan base. I do think people are tired of overly commercialized stuff. Fake sounds. She is genuine with voice, writes all her own music. Has written music for others. I believe she just wrote a movie even! She does well.

Now say take Demi Lovato. Now she has had serious issues with depression. I think she is very good. But its very depressing the music. So I dont listen much. Also Amy Winehouse. Spoke to many souls before she took her life at 27 - seems to be a significant number, like Kurt Cobain. That number can concern me often.

Adele is doing very well she has a great voice. Now she has done things like trimmed down. But her sound stays the same. I know when she first came out many folks flocked to her. They still appreciate her, but some of the fire has calmed down.

But for music everyone has their taste I suppose. I have a hard time with listening to todays music. Its not easy. Esp if its a whole lot of nothing. Like rap used to have meaning. Now its just extremely gross and unnecessary. Its lost its spark as much as im concerned.

I think this is the kind of stuff you are talking about. Demi Lovato after her near overdose: I know its raw but man. Its a lot.
