If your breath is agitated, your mind becomes restless. To quiet the mind, its best to begin by quieting your breathing. She told me to keep my back erect and to concentrate on my breathing until it was soft and rhythmic, like that of an infant.

It is a matter of learning to calm your mind. If you can calm your breath, then you can calm your mind. If you can calm your mind, you can calm your environment.
