Arms extended the right palm facing up the left down. Energy is channeled from the upturned palm, through the body and down to earth via the left palm.

As they turn the dance master slowly walks amongst them, correcting their speed or posture with his eyes or position.

Turning counter clockwise, 20 to 30 times a minute silently chanting the name of Allah.

'A secret turning in us
Makes the universe turn
Head unaware of feet and feet head.
Neither cares. They keep turning'.   Rumi

When the music ends, the dervish complete a turn and stop, facing the Sheik.  At the sudden movement their billowing skirts wrap around their legs as they bow to the Sheik. The ceremony ends with a prayer for peace to the God of the East and the West who knows and embraces all believers.

I have a tape of music by this tradition, recorded many years ago. A long piece, with a master drum and flutist, but the choir was also stunning. I loved to dance to their rhythm - it began slow and complex, with a meandering melody, then picked up into a fair sized jog. Was a great dance experience.

I used to practice their foot movements once, but its not a goer so much on carpet.

I'd love to hear that piece!
