Hummingbird pic's
« on: July 23, 2008, 08:16:02 AM »
Been watching hummingbirds for a while. They are agressive little things, always battling over who has ownership of the feeders. I've added more trying to stop the squabbling but it seems to be their nature. I try to catch their aerial displays, but they are too quick for me. Here are a few pictures of what I was able to capture.

A couple more from just a few moments ago.

Sat and held a feeder and the hummers would feed right by my fingers... the wind from their wings was much stronger than I would have imagined. Called a neighbor over to let her experience it.. took a pic. The hummers in the sky were fighting like crazy... little aerobats... amazing. There are 3 in the pic with a hawk very high above them. Catching the combat is proving very difficult.

Awesome pics, Chance.

Aren't they just the prettiest little things?  And their eyes are like tiny jewels.

DC! I was just doing the very same thing with the hummers here!
Trying to set up the feeders around here so they're not in the line of each other's vision.

great pics!
I longed for a camera with a good zoom about an hour ago here, as one of the hummers was in ecstasy at the sprinkler's spray edge. Balancing himself on the tips of plants... it was a sight!

I can well imagine! Once they get into a tangle, they do these amazing tandem-flying maneuvers, and buzz off together into the great void!

I think the flash on my camera gave their eyes that unique look...

They are beautiful little things and are so ferocious for their size... little warrior hearts beating in their chests.

It is so cool to have them light on your hands while you hold a feeder... just wrap your fingers around the feeder and sit very still... the wind from their wings comes first and then the little talons.... they are brave little creatures.. doing battle with the bigger birds who want to perch on their feeders, or fighting for the sugar water with the wasps....  I have 4 feeders near my medicine wheel... amazing energies from the little things...

I read they can eat twice their weight a day... and gain 40-50% body weight for their long migrations.... interesting little things... speaking to my spirit of late..... much to learn from them if we open minds/hearts/spirits.

It would be a thrill after which I could die a happy woman, for sure!
I had one brush against my hair after he had hovered at my ear for quite a bit -- that touching will never leave me!

Hooded orioles like the sugar water here, and it's kind of funny watching how exasperated the hummers get when the orioles land on the feeders.  Luckily, the orioles don't tarry long or make a big thing out of it -- they come, they go, quite quickly.

I worried about the bees, to tell the truth. They seemed as if they were going to sting the hummers. We got those bee caps to offset it for a while, but then, the orioles couldn't drink through the bee caps. (The orioles, in contrast, just stick their beaks into the holes and pull out the bees, with no ceremony at all.)

I hear you, DC! It's so amazing how hard they work, from morning to night! They have been great companions and messengers to me as well during this last trip to california. I'll always have them in my heart and being, now.

Just got to watch 2 hummers making love.... At first I thought they were chasing
each other, as usual, in their endless guarding of the feeders, but this dance became
a little more concerted and intricate in its pirouette-duets, and then lo, on the fly,
in midair, the joining! Twas a sight!
