Sunrise Ceremony

By Julia M. Seton
The Herald walks slowly through camp, softly beating his tom tom. As he passes each tepee door the second time, the inmates come forth d follow him, each wearing a blanket.

All proceed in silence to the Sunrise Hill. The soft thumping continues, until the first gleam of the sunrise.  Then, led by the Herald, all sing the MORNING STAR (Song No. 41), "When the sun mounts, the day is illumed."

They repeat the song, getting louder and more jubilant, until the sun is wholly risen, when the drum stops dead, and the group returns to camp.

(I should suggest that on the last singing of the song, the final note be changed to the b flat as notated.)

Without constant complete silence meditation - samadi - we lose ourselves in the game.  MM
