Michael Wood - The Story of India
« on: April 05, 2009, 08:56:50 PM »
We just watched the second of what I think is a six part series by Michael Wood, The Story of India.

It is so well done!
If there is any way you can catch this you should try:

The photography is stunning and the love of India comes through in the whole production. Plus it is incredibly informative.

I had no idea that Ashok was completely lost to time - it was only a deciphering miracle by a Brit in Calcutta that first revealed the language and the story of perhaps the greatest ruler of all time.

The greatest empires of India always had at the back a far more powerful story of personal enlightenment, or moksha. Was interesting to learn that the first great empire of India, that of Chandragupta Maurya, which achieved a splendour far beyond anything seen anywhere in the world at that time - he walked away from it all and sought moksha as a renunciant. He apparently died of starvation in his pursuit of moksha. I was taken by that myself, as I was once told by a psychic, in my youth, that I had done the same thing in a previous life, which is partly why I have this thing about people doing things to my hair. I was tearing out my hair to rid myself of attachments, she told me.

I just love Indian movies!  There is just something about them, even the cheesy ones, that is completely captivating.  I am trying to convince the kids to want to rent Slumdog Millionare.
Slumdog Millionare.  :D

Slumdog Millionaire, of course is not an Indian movie - it is a thoroughly well done movie in the western tradition - made by the man who directed Trainspotting. But it is a great movie.

It was highly criticised in India (until it won the Oscars - Indians just love American acclaim) for much the same reasons the film 'Australia' was criticised by Australians - we all get terribly precious when it comes to films about our own culture. As with 'Australia', many believed Slumdog Millionaire should have been a documentary, and as such wasn't realistic. Pointing to all those little tedious errors of fact. Then there were those in India who complained because it was too realistic - thus it was accused of being 'poverty porn'. Indians hate anyone looking at their poor classes.

Just like white Australians complained about whether 'Australia' was glorifying or denigrating the Aboriginals - you have whities on both sides arguing tediously over the most absurd inferences in the film, while Marcia Langton, possibly the most prominent Aboriginal woman in Australia, found the film depicted her early life on the missions exactly.

Just fascinating how some cultures get all hot under the collar when someone begins to display stuff that people think is 'their territory'.

Slumdog Millionaire is beautiful story, and so well done - your kids would love it!

But perhaps the best Indian movie to bridge the cultural gap, is Lagaan.
