Avalokitasvara vs Avalokitisvara (or Avalokitesvara):
The former emphasises the idea of looking (lok) on sound (svara), but in India around the seventh century, the later indicated the influence of isvara - a generic name for 'god' that is closely related to Shiva. It appears the word Avalokitasvara is a direct meaning translate to Guanyin. So did the Chinese mis-translate the more common Avalokitisvara, or did they know what they were doing in choosing Avalokitasvara for their purposes?

Can't speak to the intent of the Chinese - would be a fascinating topic for a scholar.
But I could fathom a connection between Shiva and Avalokitesvara, on an intuitive level.

Guan Yin represented with several bodhisattva heads topped by a Buddha head. the figure is standing on a lotus pedestal held up by four heavenly kings. A pair of bodhisattva attendants flank the figure on each side. Seated Buddhas are in clouds above the figure. Eight Deva kings appear below the figure.
