Wildfires rage outside Jerusalem, forcing evacuations and road closures

Wildfires raging near Jerusalem forced evacuations in several areas and led to several major road closures on Wednesday, as firefighters struggle to contain the flames amid dry conditions and high winds.

Israel is seeking international assistance to fight the fires, as the defense minister says the country is “in a time of national emergency.”

“This is perhaps the largest fire ever in the country,” Jerusalem District Fire Department Commander Shmulik Friedman told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. He warned that winds in excess of 60 miles an hour are expected “in the near future,” dramatically increasing the risk of the fires.

The fire forced authorities to close Route 1, the major road connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Wednesday – Israel’s Memorial Day.

Videos from social media show people walking along the highway with thick smoke filling the air.

Hours later, emergency workers ran amongst long lines of abandoned cars on the highway, looking for anyone who may still be in their cars, according to a video from United Hatzalah, an emergency response organization.

“We don’t know at this time what caused the fire. We don’t have even a bit of a clue. We are still not dealing with it,” Friedman said. “We are far from control.”

The fire is active on multiple fronts, authorities said, with one area concentrated around the town of Neve Shalom, located about 15 miles west of Jerusalem. In one clip, the flames can be seen next to the road along a packed section of highway.

The Israeli police has said they apprehend a “suspect attempting to ignite fire in open field.”

“Officers from the Jerusalem District arrested a resident of East Jerusalem who was caught in the act of attempting to set fire to a field in the southern part of the city,” Police Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement on Wednesday.

“A search of the suspect’s belongings uncovered a lighter, cotton wool, and additional flammable materials,” it added saying the suspect is man in his fifties from Umm Tuba, which is a Palestinian Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar held a marathon of talks with other countries to bring in firefighting aircraft, according to his office, particularly nearby countries in Europe. Three aircraft from Italy and Macedonia will arrive “as soon as possible,” the National Security Council said in a statement.

At least ten communities in the area have been evacuated, authorities said.

“We are in a time of national emergency, and all available forces must be mobilized to save lives and bring the fires under control,” said Defense Minister Israel Katz Wednesday.

There are about 120 teams fighting the fire, Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services said, as well as 12 firefighting aircraft and helicopters.

More than a dozen people have arrived at two separate hospitals as a result of the fire, according to Shamir Medical Center and Kaplan Medical Center.

Meanwhile, Hadassah Medical Center on the outskirts of Jerusalem asked the public not to come to the hospital “unless absolutely necessary.” The hospital has begun evacuating patients who do not need to be hospitalized, even as it prepares to accept new patients who may have suffered injuries in the fires.

The fire is in approximately the same location as a similar blaze last week.

He's being called "Two Doll Donnie" today. What happened, I thought other countries pay the tariffs?  :o Do the maggots still believe this schtick, or have they finally learned, The Deluded Melon's tariffs and trade war, up the prices of Americans? Well he basically said yesterday, sorry, little Jenny can get two dolls this year, not 30, cause the dolls are going to cost more. 80-90% of the toys do not come from The North Pole, like little kiddos think: but CHINA. This is going to be a sorry ass Xmas if he does not stop the trade war nonsense.

Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged that his tariffs could result in fewer and costlier products in the United States, saying American kids might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls”, but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

The US president has tried to reassure a nervous country that his tariffs will not provoke a recession, after a new government report showed the US economy shrank during the first three months of the year.

Trump was quick to blame his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, for any setbacks while telling his cabinet that his tariffs meant China was “having tremendous difficulty because their factories are not doing business”, adding that the US didn’t really need imports from the world’s dominant manufacturer.

“You know, somebody said, ‘Oh, the shelves are going to be open,’” Trump said, offering a hypothetical. “Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls. So maybe the two dolls will cost a couple bucks more than they would normally.”

His remarks followed a defensive morning after the commerce department reported that the US economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.3% during the first quarter. Behind the decline was a surge in imports as companies tried to front-run the sweeping tariffs on autos, steel, aluminum and almost every country. And even positive signs of increased domestic consumption indicated that purchases might be occurring before the import taxes lead to price increases.

Trump pointed his finger at Biden as the stock market fell on Wednesday morning in response to the gross domestic product report.

“This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s,” the Republican president, who took office in January, posted on his social media site. “Tariffs will soon start kicking in, and companies are starting to move into the USA in record numbers. Our Country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden ‘Overhang.’ This will take a while, has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS.”

But the GDP report gives Democrats ammunition to claim that Trump’s policies could shove the economy into a recession. Democrats’ statements after the GDP report noted how quickly the economy, which still has a healthy 4.2% unemployment rate, appeared to lose momentum within weeks of Trump returning.

“Trump has been in office for only 100 days, and costs, chaos and corruption are already on the rise,” said Jeff Merkley, a Democratic senator from Oregon. “The economy is slowing, prices are going up and middle-class families are feeling the pinch.”
