I've been viewing a lot of Japanese art lately ... also encountered this site:

New forms of thirty-six ghosts by Taiso Yoshitoshi

Two samples (attachments included in case the site rebukes the link):

An evil man plans to build a shrine and approaches an old tree for its wood. The spirit of the cherry tree appears as a courtesan. She needs no legs. He brags about his plans and wants to cut down the tree. Before he can raise his axe, she changes into a cherry branch and hits him.

The amorous Kiyohime pursues the devout monk Anchin. She has seen him at the other side of the Hidaka River, changes into a serpent and crosses the stream. When she arrives, he becomes terrified and hides under a bell. She embraces the object. It melts by the fire of her love and both die.

Izanami and Izanagi -- creation gods who were sent with jewelled spears to create the 'floating islands' of Japan.
Here, they are representing North and South Korea ... details are unclear, but they do not look happy.

Gorgeous!
