The Symbolism of the Tiger Lily

The symbolism of the tiger lily is like other lilies in that they symbolize the feminine principle reflecting the qualities of mercy, compassion, kindness and unconditional love. Lilies are associated with the planet Venus, the water element and the goddesses Venus, Juno, Mpethys and Kwan Y'in.  However the Tiger Lily represents the more powerful aspects of femininity.

The tiger lily symbolizes female courage. It is a good flower for a career woman to carry in her bouquet down the aisle, and it's bold orange symbolizes personal wealth and career success.

The fact that the tiger lily is bright orange also speaks of joy, productivity and pride. The brown freckles on the flower's petals allude to the concept of always being in touch with one's creativity.

The Tiger Lily is not as modest in character as they other types of blossoms in the lily family such as the calla lily, which symbolizes a sober "female magnificence" and the pink lily that symbolizes female coquetry.

Tiger lilies are very easy to grow, and once you cut off one blossom another one quickly replaces it. There are some varieties of tiger lily that will bloom straight from late June through to the first frost. This lily is also a very aggressive flower that can grow into big bushes that can quickly overtake the entire garden if you don't prune often.

Remember that people and pets can be allergic to tiger lilies so consider this before you bring them indoors; because they usually contain a great deal of thick yellow pollen that is easily spread through the air.

The tiger lily is thought of as a fertility flower because the throat is usually covered with a thick layer of pollen ready to feed and nurture.

They certainly don't overtake our garden - we have about three which poke out mid summer. They have long stems so can easily be broken or lost on the ground. We stick them through the bench back slats, and the flowers sit beside you when you sit on that bench.
