The danger for Dreamers, and of Toltec forums
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:16:39 AM »
The danger for Dreamers is becoming lost in fantasy.

If you don’t understand that, you don’t understand the dream world. The dream world is the astral: emotion-generated images.

You see a photo of a frog in a book - that night you dream of a frog talking fabulous things to you. That’s how the dream world works. It picks up fragments of items from your known world and mixes them in constantly changing patterns. But one thing that is forgotten by Dreamers - the dream world is endless. An endless arrangement of images and dramas. The true task for aspirants of any type, is *through* the dream world, not aimlessly wandering in it.

Dreamers become lost by believing the dream world is real. Believing it is telling them truths that will guide them. That is not where truth comes from. If you remember one thing, remember that it is we who carry truth into the dream world - never, that the dream world teaches us truth. Truth is in us, or it is nowhere. The big question is how we acquire that truth in the first place.

Dreamers fall for the belief that their dreams validate things, people or directions. Dreams reflect - that is all. The items you see in a dream are your own reflection. They validate nothing! If you see someone you are engaged with in a dream - hello?! That’s what everyone does in dreams. It means nothing, and is in no way a guidance to decisions about that person.

I am not saying real forces do not exist in the dream world - that you can’t contact those forces. But if your stories of dreams are all about ‘items’, you are contacting nothing, except perhaps those forces which want to manipulate you for their own designs.

The dream world is fantasy. Lucid or non-lucid dreams, the dream unfolding before you is fantasy. If you dream you struggle to reach a mountain top, or you dream you struggle to extricate yourself from a trap - the mountain top and the trap are fantasies. Your struggle is real. Both dreams are the same - the items are irrelevant.

Dreamers become lost because they forget their dreams are fantasy. They become fixated by the intricacies of their dreaming, and believe they have found something of inestimable value. Then they make endless itineraries of the most bizarre facts and features revealed to them, and become obsessed by these fantastic items and patterns.

The danger for Dreamers is to become seduced by the dream world. They believe this to be the only truth in their lives. They shift their energy away from the physical world and construct great spiritual schemas that self-justifies their imbalance. Soon they become disconnected from the common physical world. Then they become sick. Eventually they die believing their fantasy world will save them.

Dreamers become insane, unless they either belong to a balanced group, or they strive for balance in themselves. That means becoming successful in the physical-social world. Beware the mystic who has failed in society.

The Buddhists say, if you meet the Buddha in a dream - kill him. Why? Because this is not the Buddha you meet. It is your construct. Freedom lies outside constructs, so kill the Buddha - it came out of you and is blocking your path. If you meet Jesus - kill him. If you meet don Juan - it’s not don Juan, it’s all you have ever absorbed about don Juan and is pure crap. It stands for one thing - you have focused sufficiently upon some image, that your subconscious has thrown up a sockpuppet in front of you. It demonstrates don Juan has become a sufficiently important image in your life, that’s all. At best, he is a symbol of your spiritual quest. At worst he is a sockpuppet of a manipulating force active in your subconscious.

Toltec Forums

Like followers of the Order of the Golden Dawn years ago, the Toltec forums of recent years have become a magnet for half-crazed people. And like the Golden Dawn advocates, these Toltec idiots are not just harmless fools. They can seriously derail the aspirations of genuine seekers of truth. They do this in the same way they themselves became side-tracked from their own path. They dazzle with glitter, and they entangle with intrigue.

There are people out there in these forums who crap on about how they have met and are taught by don Juan, by Death Defiers, by eagles and inorganic beings, by ancient shamans and frogs. How can you tell these people are victims of the Dreamer’s Demise? Simple. Are they telling endless strings of weird and wonderful ‘items’ from their dreams? Are they conducting rivalries with other charlatan gurus? Do they put out vibes of being scary powerful shamans? Do they rave on about fantastic encounters that prove how fantastic they are? Do they crow about their prowess at dreaming and stalking?

This boils down to two things:

1. They are obsessed with spirit-conspiracy and trivia. They crap on about all kinds of fantasy knowledge they have been told of all the spookiest characters from Castaneda’s books.

2. They are on an ego-fantasy trip.

Those who have made real progress on the path do not indulge in sensationalism. They know the true path is long, and only gradual and painstaking effort can bring wealth to the soul. They are sober, and don’t substitute entertainment for knowledge. They know it is in *how* we do things that real progress is made - not what we do or what we see. It is the deepest of feelings that matter, not excitement.

The Double Loop.

Speaking precisely, this is called the Recursive Loop, but Double Loop will do just fine. This is the real danger for Dreamers and for unwittingly absorbing the energy of those who have been caught in this trap. This is what really scars the soul and causes us to divert from the true path for a very long time - way beyond this life.

There are forces out there. They live in the subconscious of individuals, groups, movements, nations and species. The Double Loop is when we are tricked into looping back and referencing ourselves again in the next loop. When the Wood Cutting industry calls itself the Forest Protection industry, they are in a Double Loop. These forces have a vested interest in making us act in loops - keeping us trapped in prison loops where we can never escape to pursue our true purpose in life. They use a special trick to do this. They tell us we are fighting against our worst enemy - themselves. That’s how they hide, and that’s how they ensnare us.

They know we know there is an enemy to our freedom - it is indelibly written in our being. So they give us an enemy - this is the spirit-conspiracy. Some forces out there are blocking out true flight - they tell us that, and we believe them because in our souls we know it is true. Then the trick comes. They convince us to ensnare ourselves in their trap, by allowing them to possess us through the very belief in the enemy they offer us. Which is none other than themselves! This is so utterly clever and difficult to see, because we get caught in the complexity of externalising their self-reflection.

I know you don’t get it, so let me give you an example. These forces do not want us to free ourselves: to kill the Buddha, to see through the don Juan sockpuppet, to escape from the conceptual form-world. We are their slaves, and they suck us dry through our emotional commitment to the form-world - any form-world. Remember it is the energetic world they operate in, and our eyes are blind to that - they simply want us dancing to external tunes, uncovering our bellies to feed them as they fly past above us.

So we meet the one person they know we would trust - don Juan. It isn’t don Juan, it’s a mask, a puppet of these forces. This ‘don Juan’ then begins to reveal to us all kinds of incredible and conspiratorial pure bullshit, which we believe. And the big revelation don Juan tells us is that there are forces out there trying to entrap us. But hey! Don Juan knows how to save you from their trap! And we fall for it - hook, line and sunk. The Double Loop - caught by our own ego desires and entranced forever in our own self-image - which is their self-image. Just like everyone else in the world.

How do we know this don Juan is a sockpuppet? Because of the crap he tells us and shows us. None of it is real knowledge - none of it can be used by us to work effectually upon our deepest core - it’s all Fox News sensationalism to make us believe we are special. True knowledge does exactly the opposite - it strips us of any desire to be special.

The next time you see a conversation in any Toltec forum which has the “Ooooooo....” factor, jump out like you’ve just trodden on a snake.

If you belong to a Toltec forum that displays consistently any of the above seductions, leave immediately. You don’t realise the damage being done to your spirit. To fly free your spirit must be as clear and pure as a snowflake. Every minute you linger, absorbing the flavours of entrapment, your spirit is dying. It is not indestructible.

Wipe the dust from your shoes as you leave their door. Believe me - you are jeopardising something of value far beyond your comprehension.

Jump! little rabbit jump!

Well said.

You sound like me, yet a bit nicer  ;)  I wrote something similiar just a few days ago.

Perhaps it's just your writing ability though...

I've not much time to write at this moment, but I will make one comment.  I don't think it's an issue with this group, but, many others I know would take this post.....hmmm.....I can't say they would take this post the wrong way, as there is no wrong, yet I think they would miss the point.

This would be the group of thinkers that are....grounded, or of the Tonal mindset.  The attitude of, "The work is done here, all that other stuff is nice, but do your work here."

This brings me to your comment, "Dreamers become lost by believing the dream world is real."  The opposite is true for many others, assuming 'this' waking world is 'real.'  Many do enjoy this concrete waking world just as much as the Dreamers enjoy their Dreaming world.

Once again this leads to the question, "Who Am I?  What Is Me?"  To add to those from this post one may then ask, "What Is Real?"

Ok, gotta run, thanks for the great post.

Kris

Do they crow about their prowess at dreaming and stalking?

This is a red flag for me - that and claims of being Powerful. And I don't mean "powerful" in the sense that one is working to actualize one's self and one's potential - but "Powerful" in the pseudo-Toltec sense. EG: "I'm seeking Power, therefore I am here [in whatever Toltec forum]."

I think much can be learned in forums, especially about human nature, heheh, but I don't believe one can gain "power" from them. And likewise, a powerful person need not ever even use the word. The old dictum rings true to me:

Those who know do not say;
Those who say do not know.

Warriors of the Third Attention
I don’t normally speak completely within the Toltec tradition, for both personal and strategic reasons. But here I will do so, due to recent events.

There are paths that go into the bush, and paths that go through the bush. Those immortal words of don Juan say it all. Write it and paste it on your door, and especially on your computer screen if you belong to the world of on-line seekers of freedom, of any spiritual tradition.

Don Juan spoke of the old Toltecs. You probably know, Toltec is the name of one of the seven races of our species - the Red Race. They were brilliant! Never before or since has a race surpassed the genetic talent of the Toltecs. What happened to them? The answer serves as a warning to all who value talent.

Don Juan curiously gives two answers, which is very insightful. The first is the commonly known consequence: they became so obsessed in their vast knowledge of the Second Attention, that they not only disintegrated from within, but were overrun and destroyed by warriors of the First Attention - basically brutal thugs who periodically wage rampant war all over the world.

His second answer, at another time, is significant. When speaking of the way the old Toltecs indulged and obsessed with the unbelievable scope and detail of their discoveries in the Second World - the dream world - carving and inscribing their endless fascinations, a wave of warriors of a different persuasion came through and destroyed the lot. They didn’t seek redemption or re-education; they wiped out every trace possible of the fixation of the old Toltec sorcerers. Who were this new wave? Warriors of the Third Attention.

Like all don Juan’s stories, this holds deeper meaning. He was stating a clear warning to Castaneda’s deaf ears, and to our alert ears: the Second Attention is a trap - a path into the bush. Only the warriors of the Third Attention seek the path through the bush. And once you have sold your soul to the Second Attention, there is almost no redemption possible - renewal rather than repair is the only way out.

For those not familiar with these Toltec terms: the First Attention is the three dimensional physical world, the Second Attention is the two dimensional dream or astral world, and the Third Attention is the one dimensional world of pure spirit. It is of course far more complex than that, but these simplistic distinctions are an excellent thumb-rule to apply clarity to an ultimately confusing and unknowable universe.

You can’t jump any stage on the path to freedom. It leads through the First and Second Attention before you find the gateway to the Third Attention. We have to become accomplished in the physical-social world, as well as in the imagination-dream world, before we have any hope of a bid for the world of pure essence. Each of these worlds has gradations, and all warriors of freedom need to know well the sub-phases of each world, as well as the practices which gain mastery of each.

But mastery does not mean complete perfection - it means ‘sufficient’ perfection. Because the longer you remain in any world or sub-phase, you may gain extended skills, but you become ensnared, and your definitive journey is forfeit. Think of it as a lift in the centre of a three story building. On the first and second floors, when the lift doors open, you step out to explore. The further you wander from the lift well, the more you forget about the lift, and the more you become captivated by the wonders and struggles you encounter. If you can hold close to the lift well, you have the best chance of remembering to return and take the lift to the next floor.

But on both the first and second floors there are other dangers. Beings live there whose intent is to entrap you in their species-current. On the first floor we encounter perhaps the worst type of being - our fellow humans. Never underestimate the devious and devastating ways our fellow humans seek to coral us and strip away our wings and spirit. But I want to speak of the being that live on the second floor, for of these we have little experience.

The Second Attention is chock full of beings who live there entire lives on that plane. So many types it is impossible to conceive of their total range. But there is one type about which we should be afraid ... very afraid.

Don Juan once revealed an extraordinary statement. All those dreamers who succeeded in awakening in the Second Attention, became captives of these beings. This applied to the old Toltecs as much as the new. And it applies to us. Why is this, and what can be done about it? In essence, while we are acquiring sufficiency in the Second Attention, we are caught and robbed of our ability to win through to the Third Attention. This should send spasms of terror down to our coccyx.

Why, is actually a mystery, but some idea can be gained when we lift our imagination to understanding the very nature of the Second Attention. It is not a world like the First Attention. In the Second Attention we roam within a being - everything is within a being, and that being is inorganic - it is ourself. But wait - what is this self? That is the task dreamers are set to divine. We roam within a living being, who is ourself, and within that there is a universe of beings.

In the First Attention we are accustomed to think we exist inside a body, which roams around meeting other selves inside other bodies, who are all separate. This is an illusion, but no matter. In the Second Attention we are turned inside out - our self is outside, and the world is inside. Beings who inhabit the Second Attention become us - that’s just how we move laterally in the Second Attention. Without any volition on their part, our self becomes the self of these beings who are the Second Attention.

Not all of these beings are benign. When we choose to focus on power within the Second Attention, we attract a highly secretive, manipulative and compulsive type of being. It is not their fault - they are simply who they are, as much as it’s in a dog’s nature to bite, a moscuito’s nature to sting, and a virus’s nature to infect, so it is the nature of these beings to consume our vitality. And like an aggressive disease, they will kill us.

What to do about it? There is only one way to escape - the path through the bush. These beings are so excited to find us they show us the wonders of the Second Attention, but we think like First Attention beings, and fail to realise all these wonders are pure imagination. And none of them relate in any way whatsoever to the Third Attention. Oh these beings know about, and will show and teach us knowledge of, the Third Attention, but it’s all illusion - illusion is the Second Attention.

Dreamers have to resist the compulsive fascination of what they see and hear in the Second Attention. They have to see through it and *see* the function, not the objects. By function I mean we have to ask, “What’s really happening here?” And that means what are those beings really doing to us? What is their true function in our ‘living’ in them in the Second Attention. We are food to them - never forget it.

Ultimately the path through the bush for dreamers is the same as it is for stalkers - the same in the Second Attention as it is in the First Attention. Absolute stillness. Complete vacating of the premises, except for awareness. Dreamers enter the Third Attention through absolute rejection of the Second Attention. Just as the warriors of the Third Attention completely obliterated all traces of the warriors of the Second Attention. Just as the Tibetan Buddhists completely dismantle every trace of the elaborate inner images of their Buddhist deities, after having spent years carefully constructing and visualising them. Complete rejection and stopping absolutely still - silent meditation in the dream itself.

I won’t go into what happens after that, as it is not so easy and simple as it is said. But you get the principle. Unfortunately you can’t step off a moving Ferris Wheel. You have to wait till it slows sufficiently. And the Wheel of the Second Attention can’t slow until we have sufficiently tasted of it’s delights - Catch 22.

Once you have tasted of the delights of the beings of the Second Attention, they have their hooks in your soul, and those hooks are there forever. The obsessive spookiness and morbid darkness of these beings infects us and all who know us. Once we have sought power in the Second Attention, those inorganic beings who seek power have us in their power, and there is nothing we can do to escape. But there is something that can help us escape.

The Warriors Party.

This is an appropriate time to bring up this subject, because in everything I have said so far, two critical points have been left out, and I wish to speak of one of them.

There is no way we can find our path through either the First or Second Attention by our own will alone. We have to use every ounce of strength and effort available, and more, to reach to a point where we make ourselves available to the direct guidance of a supreme power. This power has always been known as the Bird. The Bird is the ‘flight of the Third Attention’, just as the Second Attention is a being, so is the Third - but not in any way you can every imagine. We call it the Bird because that’s how it let’s us see it.

The Third Attention is beyond time and space. Things we know about, like the sun, earth and the solar system are all physical objects. These things and constructs have no meaning in the Second Attention, and even less in the Third Attention. The Bird is beyond ... beyond everything, so just forget about talking of it in any familiar terms.

The idea of forming a group to make the journey to the Third Attention is the idea of the Bird - not our idea. Just so, we cannot choose or commit ourselves to a Warrior’s Party - that is sheer insanity. The Bird chooses us. There is no commitment, only realisation and acquiesce. No one can make up a Warrior’s Party. To speak in such terms shows a complete lack of any understanding of the very core of the Toltec path.

However we can choose to not accept the invitation, should we be so stupid - that is allowed. Commitment is not relevant to the Warrior’s Party. Commitment becomes critical because it is the core of Will. Without Will we are nothing. A person without Will cannot commit to anything because there is no power in their word. When a person with Will commits to something, that commitment can never be broken. Thus those who seek freedom are ultra-careful what they commit to, as their word become the command of Spirit ... and they commit often, because that’s the only way to build Will.

No one can commit to a Warrior’s Party. One is either chosen and realises their fate, or they are not chosen and they have to make the journey alone. In either case, it is the Bird we follow. If you don’t know how to read the intent of the Bird, then you haven’t begun. That’s not something to be ashamed of - true knowledge of the Bird comes only after a very long struggle on the path.

It is only the Bird that can carry us through the trap of the Second Attention. It is a blessing to have the intimacy of the Bird, or to know someone who does, and who has our interest at heart. Ultimately the distinction of these three Attentions is pure garbage - it is only a useful handle on an imaginary cup. Thus when all we have done is tallied up, it will fail. Only the guidance of the Bird ... it is all in the Bird’s wings, and always has been.

If you seek the patronage of the Bird, then there is only one offering worthy of our being. No offering can secure this patronage, but if you have any spirit worthy of your being, you will strive to bring something to the table. And that something is the very best of all that we are - we bring it, and we give it up.

Thanks Michael.

I have a question.  Do you suppose, getting caught in the second attention, can cause the warrior to become ill?  Is it possible that somehow our energy body is drained or tainted by too much dreaming with certain  beings and our physical body pays the price?

I'm asking because I see an awful lot of illness in dreamers lately.  An awful lot.

Absolutely. That's exactly the consequence. You draw vital energy away from the physical world, what do you expect to happen to your vehicle in that world?

I know what I am talking about because it happened to me. It took me ten years to repair my physical body.

Would you mind talking a bit about the kinds of symptoms you had?

Oh boy, if it helps anyone I suppose so.

You know this is a bigger area than what I can say here of my own experience. But for what it's worth:

Like most dreamers who discovered dreaming and especially lucid dreaming, I was captivated. You know the release you find in dreaming - the ability to go anywhere, or at least anywhere - I always had trouble flying through mica windows - and do anything.

I perfected the art of dreaming about the age of 27, at the same time I also had my major confrontation of my life journey (you can read my book if that interests you). After that I was physically decimated, but oddly as dreamers have always found, the closer to death the body gets, the better the dreaming. There is a good reason for this.

I was astral travelling every night, and knew enough of the supportive techniques to apply them without reserve. It was a great battle to repair my body after that phase, and I never really did for many years later. In-between, I travelled to one of those small towns where in the old days there were a lot of rural workers (chosen because I fell in love with a woman - unrequited I'm sorry to say, but that's another story). This left many small cottages in the country side up for cheap rent. I still live here.

The plan was simple. In those days it was easy to get unemployment benefits to live very basically. Put my van on blocks and settled into a life for years of practising and recording music, and developing all kinds of spiritual practices - especially astral travelling.

I did everything you can imagine - or at least that I could imagine - to break the hold of the physical body on my 'identity', to leave it free to build my double in dreaming. I was very strong physically, so it took a lot to break it's hold on my identity. But the dreaming! What adventures!

What I didn't fully understand was that dreaming itself - the focus on the Second Attention - sucks vitality away from the physical world and body. Everything looks so drab compared to the excitement of dreaming, especially when you can go where you want, depending on your courage, or stupidity. I was fearless in those days, and willing to try anything. The only time I felt fear was when I journeyed into the insect kingdom to meet and strike a deal with the white-ants that were invading my cottage. I won't be going back there again.

Unrealised by me, my physical body was growing weaker. Great constitution, for which I thank my parents, but all the discordant exercises combined with a general obsession with dreaming, undermined the basic layer of my physical health.

One day while trying to move a rock, I strained my back. In normal circumstances that would have healed in short time. But due to the de-vitalisation of my First Attention, my body quickly disintegrated after that. Truly, I was a mess, and I was alone - separated from the world and financially impoverished.

But I was not without my wits. I realised what I had done - I just hadn't known how far I could push this thing. Now I knew.

I was finally in a state of multiple repetitive strain injuries all over my body. To avoid pain all I could do was lie flat on my back, but in this condition that was exactly what I must not do, else all my ligaments would calcify and harden up with the surrounding ligaments. I had to discover by trial and pain the exact limit of movement I could do - no more and no less. Set back after set back brought me to the point of panic. I realised then that I could only get out of this trap by absolute and consistent awareness and control. This was when I buried Shiva, and put all my magic books away in boxes - I had to become physically real like never before since childhood.

Tiny step by tiny step I dragged my body back to a platform from where I needed to get my mind off my body, without slipping back in condition. If you know about healing you know the constant awareness of the mind over an illness blocks the healing process. At some point we have to let the body's condition sink into the sub-conscious, where the beings who manage our healing can work un-interfered with. It took me about three years to arrive at this point from when my first strain occurred. And I was still not psychically healed from the 27th-yr event of my life.

I had the brilliant idea of starting a restaurant - which you can also read about in my book. There was no way to return to Accounting as a job, and anyway that would not give me the constant gentle physical movement I required. The restaurant was a struggle for my body, and I worried intermittently, but the work consumed my attention so fully that I hadn't the time to worry too much - I was transported over my physical problems by the shear demand of the task of running a cooperative restaurant.

That took another two years from conception to dissolve. By that time my body was just ready for a stronger task of strength and healing. I suggested to Julie that we start a gardening business - she is an excellent gardener, and I learnt to repair lawn mowers - plus I always had a gift for climbing trees. We did that for many years. I actually went on longer - over ten years. After which my body was as strong and subtle as a top sportsman. I used to love the attractiveness women found in me at the end of a hard days physical work - there is real power acquired from hard physical effort.

It was such a long journey, and along the way I had to reduce my dreaming to selected techniques, but that is another story. What I did do was to switch my focus from dreaming to stalking, which led to some extraordinary discoveries about knowledge and why we are here on earth in a physical body. Don't forget, after death if you have developed your double sufficiently, there will be ample time for dreaming, but what you can gain from physical flesh existence will be gone. Never forget that!

Many years later, I searched out a metal-detector, and found Shiva. It sits in our garden now, and I feel no fear of the excitement he generates, as I did at the peak of my illness.

Dreams are a significant part of our life. They are as real and unreal as life itself. Dreams are extremely personal - and transpersonal, too. Our dreams are a reflection of ourselves: in dreams, no matter how many characters appear, we meet ourselves. This is good to realize in dream states, as well as in other energy states.

That said, let me address this idea of "danger" - You cannot be a warrior or a Dreamer if you remain afraid of anything anywhere whatsoever. Fear is your enemy. Your own fears are your ONLY enemies. Kill them. If you cannot do this yet, let your dreams help you for they certainly can. It's not always easy, but that makes it (or can make it) always fun.
