These birds are in Australia and New Zealand, not in the US. Julie turned me onto them on FB, and I've been fascinated ever since with their stream of music. They complete each other's melody lines -- it's very special to behold. Julie says they have a reputation for being vicious: they are primarily carnivores.

They are also apparently quite tamable if one feeds them.

They "Butcher birds " have been in the doves' cage

we are waiting for one of two doves to return

if you have ever watched doves they are the most peaceful thing to see

they give peace just by watching them even

after the butcher birds had cornered and attacked one in its home

this week

it became suspicious and timing has it it appears could have chased or worse

one out


their cage is left open for them to come and go as they please



when i read the thread i also remember something

about birds depositing and replacing other birds eggs with their own

only to have the new unsuspecting? parents then raise the inferior young

in my mind and memory i thought it was butcher birds yet

could not find any more information

that they were breeding beyond a natural balance due to human feed and

induced domestic and hand feeding conditions

I'm so sorry about your dove, runningstream. I've heard that butcherbirds can be vicious, and I do hope that all is well.

The doves never came back and were replaced by lovebirds in the end .

I was told one got out too , and two butcher bird immediately chased it out of the yard.

It must have got out the hole where we had to cut the snake out of the mesh a couple months ago .

Miraculously the bird was back and went back in the cage "could'nt wait to get back to safety probably" all after a quick fly within 10 minutes .


The doves lived with the door open so they were free to come and go , but mostly they stayed . They would hide in the geisha girl tree as the

branches bend down forming a protective apron .

I think the love birds have love though , so they will just be loved up chasing each other around smooching .


The butcher birds are fierce like that , they have a peculiar look on their faces , a particular expression , it could just be territorial .
