Diwali happened while we were in Sydney - last Wednesday was the main day. "Happy Diwali" was said everywhere, and sweets abounded. It actually goes for nine days (or six as the local custom dictates).

The churning of the ocean of milk is connected with Diwali, but it also has a deeper esoteric meaning - the raising of the kundalini. I always find it instructive that both the good and bad spirits had to combine to achieve this task.

Of course, Hinduism doesn't actually have bad spirits, which has always indicated to me how mature is it's view. They have the selfish, irascible, problem-causing spirits as he 'bad', but as it all comes together in the end, none of them are actually evil. Just different paths to the ultimate.
