Let it be said at the outset that it is a useful book for those who seriously seek to implement the advice and suggestions given at Soma.

Quiet Sitting: The Daoist Approach for a Healthy Mind and Body is a combination of two translated texts from two of the most famous Jing Gong pioneers in China during the early 20th century. This no-frills handbook is essential to anyone who is interested in the Eastern technique of breathing for a healthy mind and body. Free of esoteric words and phrases, this book offers beginner students a basic, yet powerful, knowledge of the breath: where it comes from, how it is distributed throughout the body, and how to harness it to heal from within.

It is a hands-on manual/guidance not only about the breath, but also about how to start and how to proceed in working with fundamental aspects of Self.

The intro of the book might be somewhat confuĊ›ing as Yanling Johnson throws into a pot Confucius, Buddha, Lao Zi and comes up with some major Taoist concepts. However, the two texts by Chen Yingning and (especially) by Jiang Weiqiao are worth the time spent on them. The latter author was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis at a gentle age of 18. At that time there was no cure, and he pulled through with the practice of Quiet Sitting. He wrote the book at the age of 83 and died as a happy man at 85.
