Damaru
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:50:58 PM »
I'm learning the Damaru. we brought two back from Darjeeling - they are used in Hindu and Tibetan ceremonies. Shiva's drum - good spirit catcher, and it encompasses the universe, seen and unseen, past and future - the hour-glass.

interesting that it is not so easy to play. to keep both balls banging on alternate sides ... one ball keeps falling. there is a special rhythm consistancy to it. Ours don't have the handle, instead a piece of cloth one grasps in the hand - great when its working!

Sarasvati Giri is a real master at the damaru. He rattles two different sized drums simultaneously, each at a different speed, creating a specific rhythm. The damaru is the musical instrument of Shiva, with which he creates the primordial sound, the origin of all sounds.

In the early dawn, the mighty mountain rises darkly against the bright orange sky. Here, so the Hindus believe, the gods once descended to earth and since time immemorial this mountain has been a sacred place.
