The Battle of Evermore
« on: December 17, 2008, 05:26:24 AM »
This song was in my dream last night.  Was an amazing dream, not only could I hear this song but I could also see the lyrics floating across the dream.  Of course I woke up singing it and it's been stuck in my head all day.

LED ZEPPELIN

"The Battle Of Evermore"

Queen of Light took her bow, And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight, And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes.

Side by side we wait the might of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley blow,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold, The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red.

Oh war is the common cry, Pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall, the ring wraiths ride in black, Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back. Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes.

Ooh, Bring it back, Bring it back

I like this one too!
Sandy Denny, I really enjoyed her in her day. She was perfect for singing in with Led Zeppelin too, though she had her own work. Left us too young, she did.

Watching that clip made me want to see that film again - esp now we have one of those wide screens.

Quote
This song has references from The Lord of the Rings as well as other ancient lore from the British Isles. I have read that the song was borrowed from a 16th century book containing an account of a brutal battle in the British isles at that time.

What everyone seems to miss is the fact that Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page are using these myths only as vessels of allegory to draw an analogy of a much deeper reality they have experienced. Much like the ancient sages of old.. If you really would like to know the meaning of this song, and you "listen very hard" maybe the truth will come to you at last...

...
The song, along with "Misty Mountain Hop," "Ramble On," and "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," feature references to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien.   Plant was an LOTR fan. You can look at the lyrics for Ramble On to see that. "In the darkest depths of Mordor I meet a girl so fair but Golum the evil one crept up and slipped away with her"

Over the Hills and far Away

Hey lady--you've got the love I need
Maybe, more than enough.
Oh Darling Darling Darling, walk a while with me
Oh you've got so much... So much... So much...

Many times I've loved - And many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know...
I really ought to know...

Here's a great video,  Zep Live! in the 70s.

I'm on a bit of a Led Zeppelin kick tonight.   Just love Rob Plant!   My fave fave Poet of all time in the world!

This is a beautiful beautiful song:

The Rain Song

It is the springtime of my loving - the second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing - so little warmth I've felt before.
It isn't hard to feel me glowing - I watched the fire that grew so low.

It is the summer of my smiles - flee from me Keepers of the Gloom.
Speak to me only with your eyes. It is to you I give this tune.
Ain't so hard to recognize - These things are clear to all from
time to time.

Talk Talk - I've felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go. I cursed the gloom that set upon us...
But I know that I love you so

These are the seasons of emotion and like the winds they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion - I seek the torch we all must hold.
This is the mystery of the quotient - Upon us all a little rain must fall...It's just a little rain...

Tangerine

Measuring a summers day,
I only finds it slips away to grey,
The hours, they bring me pain.

tangerine, tangerine,
Living reflection from a dream;
I was her love, she was my queen,
And now a thousand years between.

Thinking how it used to be,
Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again?
And I do.

Thank You

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

All of my Love

Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light
To chase a feather in the wind
Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight
There moves a thread that has no end.

For many hours and days that pass ever soon
The tides have caused the flame to dim
At last the arm is straight, the hand to the loom
Is this to end or just begin?
* chorus: all of my love, all of my love, all of my love to you. (repeat)

The cup is raised, the toast is made yet again
One voice is clear above the din
Proud aryan one word, my will to sustain
For me, the cloth once more to spin

Chorus

Yours is the cloth, mine is the hand that sews time
His is the force that lies within
Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find
He is a feather in the wind

Chorus

I was only listening to an interview a few days ago with a man who has just published a new book on Led Zeppelin. He used to be an old long time friend of Jimmy Page, but after publishing this book Jimmy is no longer speaking to him. He thinks it's because Jimmy doesn't like to be reminded of all the horrible and embarrassing things he did when he was young.

He also said the band was Jimmy Page - he built it from scratch, hand picked the other members, and ran it in no uncertain terms that he was the boss. They had no build-up period like the Beatles or Rolling Stones - they formed and it all went exactly to Jimmy's plan - loads of fame and money.

He also talked of who Jimmy wanted first in the band, but couldn't get them - I think Keith Moon on drums, Donovan, Steve Winwood or Steve Marriott on vocals. In the end he picked two complete unknowns.

I was never into them very much because I didn't like Robert Plant's voice. Too scratchy for me. But I recall some great moments at parties when their records were being played.

I agree Jimmy Paige is Led Zeppelin.   Robert Plant doesn't have the best singing voice, but he does give a good performance and the lyrics and Jimmy and the rest of the band hold him up!
