The Fountain

Oh in the deep blue night
     The fountain sang alone;
It sang to the drowsy heart
Of a satyr carved in stone.

The fountain sang and sang
     But the satyr never stirred--
Only the great white moon
     In the empty heaven heard.

The fountain sang and sang
     And on the marble rim
The milk-white peacocks slept,
Their dreams were strange and dim.

Bright dew was on the grass,
     And on the ilex dew,
The dreamy milk-white birds
     Were all a-glisten too.

The fountain sang and sang
     The things one cannot tell,
The dreaming peacocks stirred
     And the gleaming dew-drops fell.

Look at that male mating plumage! I've collected those from the shore over the years.
Oops, then I found out that those plumes were illegal to possess.
Naturally, I immediately disposed of them.  ;) ;)

I'd like to have some of those feathers!

Seriously, I'm looking for some large, white feathers.  Have run out.

Too weird, Tommy!
Yesterday I encountered a whole bagful of them, which had fallen behind some books. I went through them, and most of them had fallen prey to those feather-mites Only one or 2 are salvageable --- I'll see what I can do to try to send them to you. Domestic goose feathers.

I also .... encountered some of my prize feathers, like a couple of blue heron feathers, and some owl feathers, from way way back.  They too had gotten hit by the mites.  :'(

I have started a small collection, and was wondering what I could do.
I found this and thought it might help someone else

If they are disintegrating ...

Then something is probably eating them. It could be anything from feather mites, clothes moths or carpet beetles to roaches or several other kinds of unwanted household visitors.
They can be washed with dishwashing liquid, rinsed VERY well, and then blow-dried. That will remove any bugs that are currently on them. Store them in a sealed container with a few moth balls and they will keep for years.
If they are kept out and displayed in a vase or etc. they will always be at some risk. Moth balls in the container might offer a little protection but no guarantees. UV light makes them weaker, brittle, and faded after a while too, so direct sunlight will cause them to deteriorate sooner than if they are stored in the dark.

I like to have mine out to look at - so I guess I'll have to keep an eye on them  ;D :P

I put my infested feathers in a plastic bag, like a larger grocery one, and spray some common insecticide into it and then tie it up semi-tight.  Shake it around a bit to get the feathers to spread the poison around to each other.    If your feathers smell then you got little friends harvesting.  Leave the bag suspended outside for a time so the beasties don't get into other stuff you have in the house that they like.  Always wash your hands VERY good with hot soap and water after handling infested feathers.  If your infestation is severe you sometimes just gotta throw the whole mess out.

I just harvested tons of Iowa game cock pheasant feathers so anyone here let me know if they need some  .......... fantastic colors with delicacy beyond words.

It's 70 out today and I begin scratching around into Mother Earth happily once again!  Spring is bliss.  t
