Huna: The Three Selves, Qualities of Heart
By Peggy Jentoft

THE THREE SELVES

The definitions of the three selves used here are mostly from Serge King. They are used with permission, but are not complete explanations. Evolving understanding of the High self includes more of what in Euro-Western tradition is considered external Spiritual elements.

The Lower self is the unconscious, subconscious self where the emotions reside. This is the shadow. It is the part that gathers the sacred Mana, the power that is used to create. The lower self is where the emotions and memory are. It is illogical; it forms literal deductive conclusions. It contains the conscience, depends on the five physical senses, and is able to use telepathy.

The Middle self is the conscious, reasoning, rational self. This self is fully conscious and reasoning, but is not the seat of memory in the Huna view. It has imagination and will, and instructs the conscience. The middle self is the ordinary part, the day-to-day mundane self. It is also the only part that can do wrong (sin) and the only wrong Huna acknowledges is to willfully cause pain or hurt to a person or being, including one's self.

The High self is the Superconscious, the God self or soul. The High self brings all desired things into reality. The high self is trustworthy and wise. It has intuitive knowing of the past, present, the fixed part of the future and possibilities. The High self communicates with the Higher powers and other High selves.

The most important thing is that the three parts work together in harmony, that they are strongly connected and able to communicate with each other. When the three selves are in perfect harmony, our lives go beautifully and seeming miracles happen.

Our goal then, from our conscious thinking middle self is to become aware of and harmonize our higher and lower selves with our middle self. This is at the center of many Huna practices. This union of the selves results in an incredibly alive and energized participation in daily life. The more traditional and ancient practices do not spend as much time on this as has been needed recently, however, for we are less integrated than would have been the norm in ancient times.

You may find that if you take a few minutes in the morning to visualize or just to invite the harmonization of the selves, it will have a positive effect on your well-being. Spend one to three minutes intending that each of your selves harmonize. Low self to middle self, middle self to high self, high self to low self seems to be the standard pattern. You may feel energy movement internally as you do this. Just let it happen. This does work, even without the attunements some schools use. When you listen to and feel for the harmonies within, and for the conflicts between your three selves, you will become able to know where your internal conflicts are and gain insight into the ways you interfere with your own dreams, goals and highest good.

 QUALITIES OF HEART

Huna does a great deal of work on developing qualities of heart and character. Important goals are enthusiasm, saying yes to life, courage and the ability to give and receive unconditional love. The huna practitioner becomes more and more aware of the nurturing and loving aspects of the Earth, and feels loved and supported by nature and connected to all of life. He or she is also able to direct energy to assist the Earth in return for that support.

 SEVEN HUNA PRINCIPLES

IKE, KALA, MAKIA, MANAWA, ALOHA, MANA, PONO
(awareness, freedom, concentration, persistence, love, confidence, wisdom)

The world is what you think it is. (Everything is a dream, all systems are arbitrary.)

 seeing

There are no limits. (Everything is connected, separation is a useful illusion.)

 clearing

Energy flows where attention goes. (Everything is energy.)

 focusing

Now is the moment of power. (Everything is relative, power increases with sensory attention.)

 presence

To love is to be happy with. (Love increases as judgment decreases; everything is alive, aware and responsive.)

 blessing

All power comes from within. (Everything has power, power comes from authority.)

 empowering

Effectiveness is the measure of truth. (There is always another way to do anything; the means determines the end.)

 Dreamweaving

THE BASIC TEACHING OF THE 3 SELVES:
One of the most important parts of the ancient teaching is that we are not just one mind, but that we are made up of three minds. The Kahuna knew this thousands of years ago.

In the "infinite wisdom" of the missionaries who arrived in Hawaii in 1819, it was decided that the Hawaiians were "heathens," that they couldn't have thought as deeply, or as logically as the newcomers from Boston. That is unfortunate, because the missionaries did not realize mental illness was virtually unknown before the arrival of the white man. Mental illness was rare because the Hawaiian Kahuna had a more highly developed system of psychology, and mental health than is present even today.

In 1970, Milton Erickson, M.D., had nearly brought the Western perception to the level of understanding of the ancient Hawaiians. He had a nearly complete understanding of the Conscious Mind and the Unconscious Mind and their functions.

THE CONSCIOUS MIND: Long before Dr. Erickson, the ancient Hawaiians called the Conscious Mind, Uhane.

'Uhane: 1. Soul, a spirit.

First, appreciate that you aren't just a Conscious Mind. The Conscious Mind is the logical, reasonable, rational part of you -- the part of you, you know, and call "I" when you say, "I think... I am... I do... I have..."

The teachings of ancient Hawaii, said that as there was a Conscious Mind (which most of us know), there was also an Unconscious Mind (which most of us do not know). And just as there was a Conscious Mind and an Unconscious Mind, there was also a Higher Conscious Mind. Each of these minds were separate, distinct from the other; so, that your Conscious Mind had hidden from its consciousness an Unconscious Mind, which had certain functions and which was separate, distinct from the Conscious Mind. Further, there was, also hidden from the Conscious Mind, a Higher Conscious Mind which also had very specific functions and which were also separate and distinct from the Conscious Mind. And that the Conscious Mind could not perceive either of these minds directly, except in certain states of consciousness. Since we are already relatively aware of our Conscious Mind, the next mind to get to know, then, is our Unconscious Mind.

THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND: What we call the Unconscious Mind, the ancient Kahuna called, Unihipili. Taken as a whole Unihipili means grasshopper...Hmmmm. If we look at the meaning of the root words that make up the word:

u: The seat of our emotions from which come feeling or grief; to stem from the heart; the mother element; the milk of life.

ni: To pour out a liquid;

hi: To blow out with force any liquid from the mouth.

pili: To cling, stick adhere, touch, join, adjoin, cleave to, associate with, be with, be close or adjacent; close relationship, relative; to belong to.

The Unconscious Mind is a very important part of you. Think about it for just a moment. Here's a part of you that runs your body; it makes your heart beat, causes the lymph system to circulate, your breathing to continue, your eyes to blink, your stomach to digest your food, and many other tasks that you never even considered. Consider this too. How aware are you of all the various things that your Unconscious Mind does? Maybe more importantly, how well do you know your Unconscious Mind? Do you consider your Unconscious Mind as a close and trusted friend, or are you at odds with your unconscious? The ancient ones taught that really trusting and getting to know your Unconscious Mind was a very important task -- the first step. Whatever your relationship with your Unconscious Mind, you will probably find that you are much closer to it than ever before as you read on.

The ancient ones, the La'au Kahea (the Kahuna who were psychologists), postulated that the Unconscious Mind had certain functions, which we could call the Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind.

Next, we'll look at the Higher Self.

THE HIGHER SELF: The great Kahuna, Daddy Bray, who lived in Kona (he died in 1968) said that mankind is made up of material and spiritual parts -- mankind is made up equally of matter and spirit, like a magnet with one pole in matter and one pole in spirit. If that is the case, then the whole of mankind has not yet been recognized by western psychology. The Kahuna say we are also a Higher Conscious Mind. The term used in ancient times was Aumakua, meaning:

Au: A flame of fire whirling through the air, as a spirit; or spirit; yours, mine, spirit of another person.
Makua: Parent, older, senior, mature; or to sustain.
(The word aumakua was also used as a "grab-bag" term meaning any parental spirit, and included many ancestors and gods who were worshiped under this term. To avoid confusion, we will refer to this case as aumakua, and the Higher Conscious Mind as Aumakua.)

Next, what is the relationship between the three minds of mankind, and how are they connected?

There is a connection between the Conscious Mind and the Unconscious Mind, and the flow of energy and information goes both ways.

There is also a connection between the Unconscious Mind and the Higher Conscious Mind, and information and energy flows both ways.

But there is no direct communication between the Conscious Mind and the Higher Conscious Mind. Even so, the Higher Conscious Mind may communicate with us by way of energy enveloping us "falling down" from above.

An ancient chant says:

"Li ta I'o o ka'auhelemoa la"

"I tremble; I have goose flesh; the I'o comes inside me because of the continuously falling fine rain."

The Ka'auhelemoa is well known in Hawaii -- it's that fine rain with small drops that blows off the mountains, and when it reaches you, you feel it, but when you touch your skin, it is not wet.

AKA CONNECTIONS: So, Mana is the means by which the three minds of mankind communicate with each other, but the Mana needs to flow through something. Imagine a piece of surgical tubing -- a little tube, about the size of piece of rope. The tubes are made of a non-material, etheric substance called Aka.

Aka: Shadow. Of spiritual essence.

So, Aka is the etheric substance, and it acts as a medium for transmission of the Mana. It's sticky, and so connects and stays connected to what ever we touch. The Aka cords look like small cords or ropes which are hollow in the middle, through which the Mana passes.

THE OUTER EXPRESSIONS: In our diagram above there are also three names that were used to signify the Outer Expression of the minds. When given external expression, the minds were given other names -- Ku, Lono, and Kane. In their external form, these three would be represented by a Tiki (wooden carving) since the ancient Hawaiians did not have paper as such to write on. The Tikis carved on the Island of Hawaii, District of Kona (Kona Temple Images) have the following characteristics:

KU: Represents the Unconscious Mind. Has a short headdress (meaning that the Unconscious Mind does not have a lot of imagination), with streamers reaching all the way down to the ground (meaning the Unconscious Mind has full contact with the physical, and the eyes are partially open (meaning the Unconscious Mind has some contact with the outer world).

LONO: Represents the Conscious Mind. Has a tall headdress (meaning the Conscious Mind has a lofty creative imagination) but there are no eyes (meaning that the Conscious Mind no contact with outside world).

KANE: Represents the Higher Conscious Mind. The Higher Self would be represented by an uncarved upright stone, since mankind cannot put form to the formless one.

What's interesting is that Ku, Lono, and Kane are also the names of three of the four major gods in the Hawaiian system. (More about the fourth in just a moment.) Why is this so? Why are the names of these major Hawaiian gods the same as the name of the three selves? The reason is one of the most important assumptions of the Huna magic system -- the Law of Correspondence, (as stated by the Kahuna Kapihe in Kona in 1850) which is "E iho ana o luna. E pii ana o lalo," which implies, "That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above." Ultimately what this means is that, taken in total, you are no different from the universe. So if you are the same as the universe then the Higher Self, Kane, is the same as the creator, Kane. Lono, as the representation of the Conscious Mind is also the God of knowledge, intellect, and celebration (among other things). Ku, as the representation of the Unconscious Mind is also the god of the physical, the emotions, and interestingly enough, war and conflict.

KANALOA: Now, how about the fourth major god in the ancient Hawaiian system? Well as we already know the fourth major element in the equation of the make up of the human mind, is Mana, and the highest kind of Mana was called Mana-loa, so the fourth major god was called Kanaloa. He was the god of the Oceans (code word for Mana), and of healing, and he is called upon in the ancient chant, Pule Hee:

"E Kanaloa, ke akua o ka hee ... E ka hee o kai uli."

"Please listen oh Kanaloa, god of the healing light, god of change and healing ... By means of flowing from the source ... let the Mana flow."

Next, the 4 Bodies that we each have.

THE EVOLUTION OF MANKIND: The great Kahuna, Daddy Bray said that moving from Unconscious Mind to Conscious Mind to Higher Conscious Mind is the lesson of life, and moving from Higher Conscious Mind to Conscious Mind to Unconscious Mind is the lesson of Kahuna Mastery. What did he mean by this? What are the implications of this kind of thinking?

Let's see from our own experience how this is true. We all know people who only experience or pay attention to the physical body. We expect that this type of person is not very evolved, since his concerns are very often just about physical or material issues.

Some people only experience the physical and the emotional body together. This person will be more in touch with their emotions, yet not very intellectually developed.

Some people experience just the Physical and the Mental Body, but not the Emotional. This person will likely be dissociated from their feelings.

And if someone was without the development of one or more of the bodies, then they would be unable to perform a function relating to that body. So for example, someone not having the emotional body fully developed would be unable to feel or express tender affections, being incapable of feeling them personally or understanding them in other people.

Worldwide, in the average man, the physical body is the only body that has fully evolved. In some people in the developed parts of the world, we find that the emotional body has matured, and the mental body has grown up to be capable of functioning subjectively. Often in this person, the mental body is not mature enough to carry the ability of abstract thought. It is even more rare to find the progression of thought including true spiritual nature and not just emotional ideals. The great thinkers and healers of our time would, of course, have all four bodies functioning.

Of course we could go on and on with examples of different combinations, but we would ultimately have to say that spiritual evolution in the Huna system involves the maturing the bodies (and the functions of each body). In Huna, the means of an individual's spiritual growth is to create the development of full integrated functioning in each of the bodies, as they develop and mature. Since each body matures fully at a different age, all are not available for development at the same time. But as a person matures, then each body becomes available to be developed and integrated:

THE PHYSICAL BODY: Is made up of flesh and blood. It is of the material world, and is ready to be developed (although it is not fully developed) at birth.

THE EMOTIONAL BODY: This body resides on the Astral or Psychic Plane, and is sometimes in Eastern esoteric schools called the Desire Body. As the Emotional Body comes into maturity, the instincts, passions, and the desire to attract or possess also begin to mature. The development of this body begins when the person is born. It is half-way mature at puberty, and as that happens we begin to notice an increase in emotions, response to attraction, the beginnings of picture consciousness, and the desire for union. Now, it becomes possible for the individual to express tender affections -- his or her emotional side. Maturity of this body can be complete in the teenage years.

THE MENTAL BODY: The Mental Body (located on the Mental Plane) comes into play, and concrete thought begins to be possible. The individual begins to experience finiteness, boundaries & limits. The Mental Body can be roughly half-way mature by the mid- to late-twenties. As the maturing process continues the mind now begins to develop the ability to appreciate abstract qualities. Both deductive and inductive thinking processes can now begin to be developed. The Mental Body can be fully mature in the mid-thirties.

Half way through the maturity of the Mental Body, the spiritual nature of the individual quickens -- the individual may now feel an urgency to get on with "something," usually spiritual. This development of increasing maturity can bring about a spiritual awakening where the individual reevaluates his entire life's path, and direction. In Western society, this awakening, which can come between the ages of 28 and 32, is often viewed as a crisis instead of a natural development of the Mental Body. In Western astrology this corresponds to the Saturn return.

THE SPIRITUAL BODY: To complete the evolutionary cycle, the being must return to spirit. Although maturity of the Spiritual Body is possible to develop beginning after the development of the Mental Body in the mid-thirties, an individual may not ever be aware of their Spiritual Body in a single lifetime. The Spiritual Body can be half-way matured in the late forties, and complete in the fifties. If it does, spiritual pursuits may become all- important, all-consuming.

Half-way through the maturity of the Spiritual Body or sometimes even later, the spiritual nature of the individual really begins to assert itself, and if the earlier spiritual message was attended to in the late 20's, then this quickening will likely not be disruptive. If the spiritual awakening was not fully attended to in the late twenties, there can be another reevaluation at this time, and this may also be mistakenly viewed as a crisis. In Western astrology, this time corresponds to the Uranus opposition, and may bring a mid-life crisis.

It is important to remember that, while the various bodies are available to mature at these ages, individuals develop at different speeds, so someone may develop spiritually very early on, while another may develop late in life, or may not develop spiritually at all. The Kahuna of ancient Hawaii were adept at discovering which children would develop quickly and which ones would not. Uncle George (our mentor in the ancient Hawaiian chants, George Naope) was selected at a very young age to learn the ancient chants by his grandmother.

BALANCE DURING GROWTH: Balancing of the functions of each of the bodies is especially important when it comes to processes which speed up our evolution, such as bringing down spirit. Each of the bodies needs to be balanced so that the person remains balanced. The ancient saying is, "Noa first then Noho"

Noa: Freed from taboo, constantly burning, of fire, or the cleansing through the fire of spirit.

Noho: Bringing spirit down inside the physical body

One process by which we do this, then, is breathing. Since Mana, the life force energy, is the fourth element in our transformational equation, and since the word for four is "Ha," also meaning breath, the way is through the breathing. (See Meditation "Ha" Breathing)

THE PROCESS OF EVOLUTION

Spiritual evolution is the fundamental work of mankind. As we begin our climb up out of the lowest depths of the evolutionary path, we begin to realize that there is something more to life. At some point in our climb we begin to ask, "What can I do spiritually to evolve myself more quickly?"
First consider that we are evolving not as one self, or one mind, but as three. Continuing evolution for all forms of life moving from the lowest form to the highest form is a basic concept in Huna, well documented in the Kumulipo (the ancient Hawaiian chant of creation). [Beckwith, 1951] It is easiest to think of all three of the selves of a man incarnating in a single human being, and then each one evolving so that the Unconscious Mind evolves to become a Conscious Mind, and the Conscious Mind evolves to become a Higher Conscious Mind. Think of the three as a team -- when one of the team steps up, the others step up also.

OUR OWN EVOLUTION: The description of the Higher Self lights the evolutionary path for us. Our evolution as a Conscious Mind requires that we first establish rapport with the Unconscious Mind. It is a mistake to believe that the Unconscious Mind can be beaten into submission. It must be loved and nurtured by the Conscious Mind, as a parent would love a child.

Then with the rapport established, the Unconscious Mind must be cleared of all negative emotions, fixations, complexes and false identifications. This is what is required for the Unconscious Mind to evolve to become a Conscious Mind. It is the Conscious Mind who must assist the Unconscious Mind to do this process. As is shown in the work of Milton Erickson, clearing out all the negative emotions, fixations, complexes and false identifications must be accomplished by the cooperation of both the Conscious Mind and the Unconscious Mind.

When this has been accomplished, we must then balance the energy in the Physical Body so that the neurology can handle the balanced energy of the Higher Self. This means we must balance the male and female, the fire and water, the Yin and Yang.

This balance will culture the nervous system so that it can handle the higher Vibrational energies -- the higher vibration or frequency of the Higher Self. We the need to continue to raise the ability of the nervous system to handle higher an higher vibrations and frequencies of the energy. Some specific ways for doing this are outlined in Meditation, Chanting and Symbols

Ho'oponopono means to make right. Essentially, it means to make it right with the ancestors, or to make right with the people with whom you have relationships. We believe that the original purpose of Ho'oponopono was to correct the wrongs that had occurred in someone's life including Hala (to miss the thing aimed for, or to err, to disobey) and Hewa (to go overboard or to do something to excess) which were illusions, and even 'Ino (to do harm, implying to do harm to someone with hate in mind), even if accidental.
This description is by no means a complete training in how to do Ho'oponopono. While appropriate to do for yourself, for yours and others safety, it should not be done with someone else without training.

For example, let's say your five-year-old grandson punched another five-year-old intentionally with hate in mind. If asked, then the one who was punched would forgive the other immediately, because it is inappropriate for anyone to carry guilt any longer than they had to, if it were not necessary.

We call this the Hawaiian Code of Forgiveness, and it's an important thought, because when we forgive others, who are we forgiving? Ourselves, of course.

If you are familiar with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), there is a saying, "People are only doing the best they can with the resources they have available." If you've heard that before, it has to do with forgiveness. Think about it. As you do consider that you are included in "people."

In the Eastern traditions, too, there is a real tradition of being aligned with and cleaning up relations with the ancestors. In Japan, China, as well as the Hawaiian tradition, it is thought to be important to align and clean up any past problems that you've had in relationships, especially with relatives.

At the same time, perhaps there are family patterns you do not want. Certainly you have heard the saying, "We just don't do that in our family," or "That's the way it is in our family." What happens then, is that certain generational themes get passed along in families, like sadness or any number of different traits. Ho'oponopono will allow you to clean this up.

THEORY: We carry inside us as parts of the Unconscious Mind, all the significant people in our lives. (These parts of us often look very much like Carl Jung's archetypes.) Ho'oponopono makes it "all right" with them. The process of Ho'oponopono is to align with and clean up our genealogy as well as to clean up our relationships with other people in our lives.

The Process of Ho'oponopono:

Bring to mind anyone with whom you do not feel total alignment or support, etc.

In your mind's eye, construct a small stage below you
Imagine an infinite source of love and healing flowing from a source above the top of your head (from your Higher Self), and open up the top of your head, and let the source of love and healing flow down inside your body, fill up the body, and overflow out your heart to heal up the person on the stage. Be sure it is all right for you to heal the person and that they accept the healing.

When the healing is complete, have a discussion with the person and forgive them, and have them forgive you.

Next, let go of the person, and see them floating away. As they do, cut the aka cord that connects the two of you (if appropriate). If you are healing in a current primary relationship, then assimilate the person inside you.
Do this with every person in your life with whom you are incomplete, or not aligned.

The final test is, can you see the person or think of them without feeling any negative emotions. If you do feel negative emotions when you do, then do the process again.

A = AO
L = LOKAHI
O = OIAIO
H = HA'A HA'A
A = ALOHA  As a code of conduct, a way of acting.

As our power grows to a higher level, our capabilities will grow, too. The paradox is that as our own power increases, we use less and less of it. The more powerful we become, the more powerful our words are, the more attention we need to pay to what we do with our actions, thoughts and words. When we become totally powerful, we don't use it at all.

A = AO

Appears as AO, NA AO, NA AU AO

Light - In our behavior, one of the things that we need to do is to look to see that all of our behavior moves us toward the light. Therefore always ask: does my behavior lead me toward earth-ing my energy or toward enlightenment? So we should be acting in a way that leads others and ourselves toward the light, in the direction of the light with watchful alertness.
To look -HO'O AO to look for right time and right place. To pay attention to what's happening around you, look outside self, being circumscribed (meaning appropriate in all occasions). Someone not circumscribed will act silly and talk, talk, talk... And when we talk we're not listening. Interesting people like to overwhelm us. Interested people listen to us. So, look around and take everything in. Pay attention!! You have to choose whether it is the right timing to say what you have to say out loud or not.

L = LOKAHI

Oneness. Oneness among us. All is one. We need to support the people that are with us on the path. Anything less that 100% support is sabotage. Oneness requires being PONO and ONE with everybody. PONO means, if you've got something with me, come and tell me. The process can be done inside self and outside in person. Get together and talk it out. (KUKA KUKA) If you are "inside" you can't look to the other person to see if you're PONO. This is why it is very important to know how to listen and look across rather than talk and look inside.

"Every breath of air coming out your mouth, sucks your eyes out."

O = OIAIO

I'O = truth. Tell the truth. Most of us are too polite to tell each other the truth and by this action we actually don't participate totally in the process of constructing our Universe. Apart of the fact that we put this message out as being all right, we hold back a part of us and we don't have total truth. Therefore we can't have Oneness. Withholding something back is just not allowing us to be one with anyone.

We can't have LOKAHI without full OIAIO. If we don't trust people with the same goals & aspirations as ourselves, that are on the same path, then who can we trust????

H = HA'A HA'A

Means to be humble. HA'A HA'A is a very important concept in being aware. Ego is a big trap in the spiritual evolution. The minute you think you know something, you're ruined in spiritual matters. The only reason you're not saying the truth is ego. "He doesn't deserve the truth". If you play the game of power you'll always have to know more than others. If you're playing the game of showing off, you'll always have to have more than others to show.

On the other hand, the more you're putting out there in terms of sharing with others, the more is coming back to you, and accordingly you get more and more energy coming to you. Remember to remain humble. If you think you know more than others, then you have to prove it, and the minute you have to prove it, it becomes power and the minute it's power it's not the last A...which is:

A = ALOHA

Absolute, true love. The minute you think you're better than somebody else, the minute you make comparisons, judgments and spiritual judgments, you separate yourself from the true Love. In that moment you give up the spark of divine essence that comes from pure spirit, the love that we are, all of us. The minute we make comparisons, we're not HA'A HA'A. According to the research, Elizabeth Kubler Ross, wrote in a book: "before you go you're going to be asked: Did you love enough? Did you learn enough?"

Many of the Advanced Huna Techniques are involved with the process of working with gods & goddesses, and with casting spells. As one advances in Huna it is also important to be protected: Read about Protecting Yourself

We all have access to all of the gods, angels, and teachers. You have assistance to do whatever you need, to do. And they're ready to assist you.
If, however, you feel you are held back by negative entities or negative energies, look again. This time look inside. You'll probably find it's your own negative emotions that hold you back. As soon as you remember who you really are (light, love, joy, and happiness) the negative energies loose their power in the light. Remember, focus on what you want.

If you are doing Noho with an entity of the light, you will quickly find that it will not use "should." It will never tell you what to do. It won't judge you. Higher level guidance does not judge. Expect to find only love there. You will find that a higher level being will discuss, lecture, etc. -- but not judge. Beings of the light will be all love.

Just remember who you are! Remember you're a being of light. Send the negative energies light and love. Love will always triumph as it is the most powerful, and it cuts through the negativity.

To protect oneself from unwanted energies, you have to remember one paradox:

It is important to know, for the purpose of understanding how things work, is that the World is as you think it is. Reality is relative to the observer. Truly the basis of all shamanic practice is that your world is a reflection of your beliefs. In the Middle Ages people believed the world was flat and before that they thought the Sun moved around the Earth. These were the beliefs of those times.

Even today, we believe and we're confident about many things, but we know only what we perceive through our 5 senses. The world is what we think. As we change out perception (therefore our beliefs) our universe changes as well.

If you believe that you're broke, hopeless and a poor helpless victim, this is going to be your world. Michael Talbot, the author of The Holographic Universe showed us how "spontaneous remission" could occur by holding in mind the right belief therefore transforming illness to health. Think for a moment of how many important changes YOU made throughout your life by becoming aware of different choices.

While the world is what you think it is, the shaman goes a step deeper. You are projecting the play called "your life" through your decisions, beliefs and choices day by day. Everything in your awareness is a reflection of you and your beliefs. Therefore what you perceive to be "the truth" is only your experience Ð through your own filters of what we call "life".

Since perception is projection, any unwanted energies are simply unresolved material at the unconscious level Alan P. Lewis, the "Golden Kahuna, "says that " it is wrong and negative to hold onto the extreme fears. When you and your subconscious are agreed that it is time to remove and release them, wipe (them] clean..." (Lewis, 1983)

Casting Spells:

Most people are unaware that casting spells is something that goes on all the time. People cast spells on a regular basis. When you imagine something with a great amount of desire, when you visualize it over and over again, when you dwell on it, think about it and ruminate on it, you're actually doing a similar process to that of casting spells. Of course the ancient Hawaiians cast spells.
The process in Huna for casting spells involves more than just producing certain results in the immediate universe; it involves a process of personal growth and evolution with each spell you cast.

One of the major unspoken presuppositions when a person is casting a spell is that there is something that stops you from getting what you want. Otherwise you wouldn't need a spell. What is it then?

Considering your Universe as being your creation (which is another major assumption in Huna), your future is influenced by your past. The only point where you can change something about both the past and the future, is now. When you cast a spell, you need to make sure you understand the difference between the spell (which acts in the future) and the present Ð the now.

There are people who cannot conceive that REAL is anything more than the physical plane - the matter which they can touch and feel. To believe what you do in your mind isn't real, you limit yourself. Dreams, thoughts, feelings are REAL to you; however they have no substance. That doesn't make them less real.

In Huna, spell casting always works on the presupposition that the call to the higher level demands an answer. Even the DESIRE for casting a spell has already put in motion some forces. This is in fact one of the many assumptions of Huna Magic.

Knowing this, in the process of casting a spell, you have to ask yourself always several questions:

Is this REALLY what I want?
What are the long term effects of my casting this spell?
What would REALLY happen in short and long term if I get what I want through casting this spell?

In Huna there is another major assumption: if the spell is not win-win, you may have to pay. Every action implies a reaction. This is why is important to check carefully the consequences of your actions for yourself and all others around you.

We know all so well, that one of the laws of the universe is, "any cause produces an effect"; we also know that any cause, after going out into the world, will return to its source. So out of these two laws, the third one appeared: the cause will produce that effect, good or bad, for which it was provoked. This implies how careful we should be with every action, word, or thought, for each of them unleashes the cause producing effects about which we are not sure. Following this short analysis, we can also say that any "bad" or "good" thing form wherever it comes, is our own making.

Let's take the example of the mythological serpent with the tail in his mouth. The symbolic serpent has emitted a cause. Let us say that it has eaten it. After going through his body, the cause has come out under the form of waste. The serpent looks and cannot believe that waste is its doing. 'I ate only good and tasty things, how is it possible this transformation in this unbearable product?' The point is not to get angry and curse the tail for producing something you do not like. This is the effect of your behavior. Do not look around for something or someone to blame when the effects are in discordance with your liking. Sometimes the re-action may come under a form, which you cannot recognize, but it is always your action that started the process. This may not be always pleasant, but how empowering to know that we are at cause of everything happening in our universe.

Knowing this, what kind of spells can we cast? A few examples of spells with the most benefic effect over us are those related to health, of the physical or emotional or mental or even spiritual body, releasing past issues, finding the life purpose and living It, time constriction and expanding, increasing the energy level in the body and opening Chakras.

So, how do you actually cast a spell?

Decide what you want
Make a written statement of it (for those who know NLP you can use here all the Keys to an achievable outcome)
Make sure you state the spell the way you want it not the way you don't want it (e.g: I want my body to be totally healthy rather than I don't want pain in my body).
Cast the spell.

WARNING: You can improve your relationship if there are things you're not happy with, but here's a warning: love and hate spells have a particular nasty effect to backlash upon you. Use not fear, for fear binds you to the darkness. Be careful with what you wish for. It will come true.
Remember you get what you focus on, so focus on what you want. If you want light, focus on the light. Declare yourself to be the conscious cause of all that happens in this universe and thereby take responsibility for all that happens. This is the step that raises you to the stature of magnificence and makes you the Kahuna. To gain maximum control in the universe, assume cause for every effect.

BALANCE: With regard to balance, it is important to remain balanced, grounded -- "...it is not enough for our mental and spiritual development that we draw down the Divine Light, we must also draw up the earth forces. Only too often mental health is sacrificed to spiritual development through ignorance of, or denial of, this fact. Nature is God made manifest, and we blaspheme her at our peril... The adept never speaks of hell, but of the kingdoms of unbalanced force. [Fortune, 1922]

ULI NANA PONO Adapted from Julius Rodman, 1970
Uli (or Uliuli) is the name of the goddess who was the wife of the creator, Eli Eli, who was thus our Heavenly Mother.

Some of the priests and priestesses of old Hawaii referred to the goddess Uli as ``Uli `a na` na,'' ``The peaceful Flame of Serenity,'' or as ``A Na `I Malu,'' ``The Infinite Serene Flame of Love and Protection.'' Uli was known to all as the ``Kahuna ao Na` Wahine,'' ``The Serene Woman,'' ``The Lady of Peace,'' ``Goddess of Serenity,'' ``Goddess of Peace.'' Many called Uli ``Na Wahine o Na Lani,'' ``The Peaceful Lady,'' ``The Queen of Peace,'' ``The Serene Woman of the Tranquil Heavens.''

To the High Priests (Puhio kaoka) Uli was known as ``Na Wahine o ke ao,'' ``The Resplendent Lady of the Sky,'' ``The Lady of Light,'' ``The Lady of Wisdom,'' ``The Lady of Enlightenment,'' ``The Goddess of the World.'' And the High Priestesses gave Uli the title of ``Kea Kea Lani Wahine,'' ``The Heavenly Goddess of the Cross of White Light.'' Temple Priests addressed Uli by her consecrated name, ``Na na I A E,'' which only they were permitted to utter with utmost humbleness. Only those few Kahuna who reached the most rarefied and exalted plane of spiritual illumination addressed Uli as ``Ka Wahine Ke La.'' Some translators have said that Ke la means ``The Lady That,'' or ``The Goddess That,'' whereas the word Wahine when applied to Divinity means ``goddess.'' Esoterically, kela means ``That.'' But concealed within the Huna, or profound depths of the word Ke La (Te Ra to the ancients) is a very important esoteric meaning: the Sun, identical to the Egyptian reference to the Spiritual Being that is the generative force behind the Sun, or the Light and Life of the Sun.

Uli was the female generative force of the Sun, the goddess of the Sun, ``Ka Wahine Ke La!'' In many Eastern religions God is referred to as ``That.'' In the Book of Genesis the Hebrew prophet Moses stated that God said unto him: ``I am That I am.''

Ancient Egyptians worshiped Ra (pronounced La in modern Hawaiian) as the Supreme Spiritual Being behind the Sun. The Christian ``amen'' appears to have stemmed from the ancient Egyptian ``Amen-Ra.'' In tracing the origin of the early Egyptian religious beliefs, one might go back into primordial times to the sacred teachings of the Holy Mu of Ka Lua, the Lost Continent in the South Pacific region. The Mu were the world's original worshipers of the Spirit of Fire, the Supreme Being that is the Light and Life of the Sun, and the generative power of radiant energy behind the Sun of our Universe. And it was from Ka Lua that the Hawaiians derived the teaching of the Holy Mu. When European voyagers discovered Hawaii, the High Priests of the Temples of Divine Worship were still teaching to initiates the sacred and inspired spiritual philosophy of the Mu of Ka Lua.

Uli was the most important female deity in the ancient Hawaiian pantheon of gods, for she was the mother of gods and goddesses.

It was Uli who released the Living Water that flowed in the Breath of Life from Keawe unto the females of earth's peoples, just as the male gods released the Living Water that flowed from Keawe unto the males of earth's peoples. Uli was referred to by the ancients as ``the goddess with the discerning eye who perceived everything that transpired on Earth.'' Sometimes the kahuna spoke of her as ``Uli nana Hewa.'' ``Uli sees all injustice and unrighteousness.'' And at other times the goddess was spoken of as ``Uli Nana Pono,'' ``Uli beholds all justice and righteousness. Nothing escapes her all-seeing eye.''

< Uli Nana Pono (to see other symbols, click here.)

The ancient Hawaiian symbols that are on this page are Copyright © 1997, Tad James, and are reprinted with permission from the book The Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna. All rights reserved.

Uli was one of the exalted deities to whom the kahuna prayed when they wanted to know the identity of a culprit. The prayers of the kahuna were never left unanswered. If Uli were unavailable, one of the many hostesses of her Royal Court in Lanikeha, the Kingdom of Angels, listened to prayers and conveyed them to her. Always the kahuna received directions from above, and thus were known always to nab their man. As both good and bad persons of every religious persuasion pray to the same God or gods, so both the good and the bad Hawaiians prayed to Uli.

The evil sorcerers (kahuna ana`ana) and their apprentices petitioned Uli to aid them in performing their acts of black magic, while the good kahuna petitioned her to aid them in performing their kindly deeds. Needless to say the fact that evil ones prayed to Uli did not make her an evil goddess, an absurdity concocted by early Christian missionaries in their efforts to discredit her. The more thoughtful among the Hawaiians knew that the faults of men are not the faults of deities, they are the faults of those who failed to learn the teachings of Divinity. They knew the gods never indulged in the practices of evil and ignorant men. Men's evil deeds are the products of their own vile minds, the consequences of ignorant and unrighteous thinking.

Uli still resides majestically in the Celestial Realm of Lani Uli, her home long before earth flowered into its existence apart from the sun. Seers of old Hawaii, who penetrated the thin veils that sheath life in the Celestial Realm from the perception of most human creatures, envisioned Uli as a resplendent figure bathed in a bluish-white aura that outshone the bluest star. And at times those kahuna makaula (priestly seers), who were pure enough in mind and in spirit, saw the goddess Uli project an aura of golden light as she drifted serenely on her way across the sky, while from her halo, rainbow-hued rays extended in all directions.

To the few devotees of Uli who reached the highest plane of esoteric perception, which permitted them to see with their third eye, the ``Spiritual Eye'' that lies just behind the forehead, above the bridge of the nose, just above the inner corners of the eyebrows, Uli would reveal herself and shower upon them her love and mercy.

When the traditional religion of the Hawaiians was abolished in 1819, in the year before the first Boston missionaries arrived with the Christian Gospel, and the temples with their wooden images were burnt, Uli was not destroyed. Only the wooden symbols of Uli were demolished, for no mere mortal has the power to destroy divinities who were created by the Supreme Father in Heaven.

A belief is growing among modern-day Hawaiians that the Heavenly Mother, Uli, eagerly awaits the day when her children will once more raise their faces, their eyes, and their hands and pay her homage as did their forefathers for many thousands of years, so that she may once again bestow her blessings on them.

Let's look and see where Uli is in relation to the other Hawaiian Gods & Goddesses

Io, Keawe, IAO, Kela, Tera: I'o is the unmanifest infinite source of creation. Before time began, I'o was. Then, Io breathed forth Mana which pervades space equally and is in every living thing. Mana gives all living creatures the power to live and be alive. Io sent the Mana across the Po (the darkness), and created Kane, the creator, and creation began. According to Leinani Melville, Io spoke the word Ola into the emptiness of the Po, and commanded the creation into motion. This brought the flaming cross of light, the Kaukahi.
Io was also the first and original Hawaiian God. The 4 major gods, Ku, Lono, Kane and Kanaloa came later. The Hawaiians would later drift away from Io into the Aumakua system, and then to the 4 main gods with the establishment of the systems of Pa'ao.

Kane, Elieli, Eli, Kane Ulu Lani, Kane Nui Akea: Io sent Mana across the Po, and created Kane, Io's son -- one of the creators of life on this earth. Kane was created, then Na' wahine was created. Keawe, Kane, and Na' wahine dwell together in the house of the sun (Hale a ka La). Kane is the primordial lord of the sun, and also appears in many different aspects which are personifications of natural phenomena such as Kane-hekili, the god of the thunder, and in the Taro root which, like Kane is purple. Kane is represented by an uncarved upright stone, since mankind cannot put form to the formless one. Kane is lord of the west.

Na' wahine, Uliuli, Uli: Io manifested as Keawe and became his heavenly daughter Na' wahine, the Goddess Uliuli, the wife of Kane. Uli is the highest manifestation of universal feminine energy, the Goddess of Serenity. Uli, Keawe's first daughter, is also worshiped as Malama, the goddess of the moon. Uli as Uli- nana-pono was the one who saw all things the individual did that were right. As Uli-nana-hewa, she also saw all the things that an individual did that were wrong. Together Eli (Kane) and Uli (Na' wahine) created Kanaloa, Ku, and Lono, their first three sons. They also had three daughters: Tapo, Hina, and Laka, who married the Kanaloa, Ku and Lono.

In most of the original systems of the peoples of the earth, through out the world, Mana is in the domain of the feminine. Man without the goddess energy is unmotivated -- not moved to action. The male energy is the domain of form, the femine of energy. Woman is the creator of life -- the creator of Mana -- because it is she who creates life, and so brings out the life force energy -- Mana.

Kanaloa: Son of Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Tapo. Kanaloa is the ruler of the oceans, and consequently the ruler of the Mana. Kanaloa channels or funnels the Mana that comes from Io to Kane to Kanaloa. Since Kanaloa is the ruler of Mana, he is also invoked in some cases to alleviate or disperse disease (see the chant Pule Hee).

Kanaloa is Lord of the South. When the Christian Missionaries arrived, they decided that Kanaloa was the devil, cast out of heaven. We do not believe that this was originally the case, since the Christian church has had a history of branding local deities as the devil, as for example, the god Pan in western Europe.

Kapo, Tapo: A daughter of Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Kanaloa. As such, she becomes the feminine aspect of Kanaloa. Kapo is also one of Pele's seven sisters, and one of the goddesses of the Hula.

Ku: Created by Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Hina. Ku and his manifestations, such as Ku-ka-ilimoku (Ku, the eater of islands -- the personal god of King Kamehameha,I) were brought to Hawaii by Pa'ao and when that happened, the original order was overthrown. When Ku became as the primary god of Hawaii (somewhere between 750, and 1250 A.D.), the balanced system where men and women were honored equally was overthrown. Today, Ku is the prevailing deity in the Heiau of Hawaii, and so women are not allowed on the platforms of the Heiau and are not allowed to make offerings. While we do not agree with the Kapu against women in today's current system, we respect the beliefs of the current Kapu system. The days of dishonor to women are over, however, and it is time to end that prohibition. Ku is Lord of the North.

Hina: Hina is a daughter of Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Ku. She is the feminine aspect of Ku. In many situations today, in Hawaii, Hina is invoked in facilitation of the process of physiological healing, since Ku is the presiding deity of many Heiau.

Lono: Lono is the son of Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Laka. Lono is the god of learning, and intellect, and as Lono-i- ka-makahiki, is the god of the freedom of the end of the year. Lono has a number of aspects, such as Lono-makua who starts fire with a staff called pahoa. (In ancient times, the women did not start fires, men did, so the men cooked.) Lono is lord of the east.

Laka: Laka is a daughter of Na' wahine and Kane, and married to Lono. Married to Lono, she embodies the feminine aspect of Lono. As one of Pele's most prominent sisters, Laka is one of the major deities of the Hula. She is also one of the seven sisters of Pele.

Wakea: Wakea is the father of the earth, and the prevailing deity of the gods and goddesses of nature.

Papa: Papa is the earth mother, and is also known as Haumea. She was also called Ka-luahine. Papa and Wakea are the mother and father of Honua, the being that is the earth.

Honua: Honua is the being that is the earth -- the spirit that is the planet. Honua's daughter is the goddess of the volcano -- Pele.

Pele: Is the goddess of the volcano. Pele has a staff -- a staff used to find out if ground is dry. Many books on the subject say that Pele is a myth, but many families of Hawaii today believe that Pele was an actual person from Kahiki (somewhere other than here), or Kahinina (the East). It was believed that she lived in the land Kuwaihealani.

Just remember that from an anthropological perspective, very little is known about the Huna tradition - same with the Mayan. Because Huna covered such a range of islands, it is likely that as with the Australian Aboriginals, there is no centralised framework.

Much of the material published on the Aboriginal, Mayan and Huna spiritual world-view is largely informed-speculation. The people who still belong to these traditions have revealed some stuff, but unfortunately they are only the remnants of traditions which have long disappeared. Even they don't know how their ancestors really 'saw' the world.

So when reading material which expounds the spiritual tenets of these cultures, always take them on board with a grain of salt. Especially be wary when the propounded 'beliefs' of these cultures seems to reflect the modern new-age spirituality world-view. If you see all the 'good stuff' that we have become familiar with in the last few decades, be suspicious.

That doesn't mean there is not knowledge in the stuff coming out, but unfortunately it tends to be an agglomeration of external practices and objects. What is lacking is the inner core, which arranges all this in specific unique ways - and that makes all the difference.

A very well educated Aboriginal friend of mine, who teaches Aboriginality in universities - actually is a specialist in all tribal-original cultures, and has just returned from a trip to the Berbers in Morocco, the lucky bastard - was extremely scathing about all this stuff in Australia now from the Aboriginals about their traditional identity. "We simply don't know how they saw the world" he said.

Well im sure some of this is 'hidden' cause i dont think all is obsolete, and it really depends per getting anything on the relationship with the gods, but I do feel, maybe per my own intuition ill admit, the concept of the three selves plus the physical self, is accurate. Which seems to be pretty mainstream with many other religions and certainly new age thought, which really is 'old knowledge.' Also due to Jung's and Freud's influence on the unconscious self, which added another dimension, but really was what many other spiritual folks already knew, where many christians back in the days saw just one self as one, with the exception of soul and spirit, but not say the emphasis of really needing to 'integrate,' as much as the spirit would decend per grace, and then per the soul how it was already damned. I see things more different with the huna, that the only sin was doing to another, there was no 'original sin' which is probably one of the big grievances the christians had, esp with any people when they worked over folks to try to conform them. Surely tried to do this to the aboriginals too.

Either way its still a fascinating spirituality which was due some mention in here.

Hidden Mysteries By Joshua David Stone
The Huna teachings are an ancient secret science that has come to the West through the work of Max Freedom Long. Long initially learned about the teachings of Huna from William Tufts Brigham who had spent forty years living in Hawaii, trying to understand the secrets of the Huna teachings. He had been able to obtain much information but never able to get to the core of the teachings. Long had heard of Brigham's interest in Huna and searched him out. Long felt that Brigham would find the asnwers to the teachings.

Long studied Brigham's work. He too came across obstacles in his search. The Huna teachings had been passed on by word of mouth. The few kahunas left in hawaii would not speak with him.

In 1935 he made made a fresh translation of the chants and prayers based on the root words. The new translation was the key that unlocked the secret of how the kahunas performed their seemingly magical feats.

Long spend the next forty years studying and working with the Huna teachings, until his death in 1971. The work passed to Dr. E. Otha Wingo, who is head of the Huna Research Associates and who is the author of Twelve-Lesson Huna Correspondence Course. It teaches the practical application of the Huna teachings.

The essence of Huna teachings is that the human being is made up of three selves, or minds. They can most easily be called the subconscious mind, the conscious mind, and the superconscious mind.

The kahunas call the conscious mind the "uhane", or middle self. this middel self is the part of the human that is conscious of its own existence and has the ability to reason. It has also been given free will to create as it pleases, along with the low self.

The subconscious mind is called the "Unihipili" or low self. It is the part of the human that presents the unconscious material to the conscious mind so it may reason for or against it. The low self is the storehouse of all memory abd the seat of the emotions. Its form of mentation is considered to be that of animal-level reasoning. The term "low" has no reference to rank or importance, only to the fact that it is below the level of consciousness of the middle self and to the fact that its bodily center is in the solar plexus rather than in the head.

The third part is the high self, called the "aumakua" by the kahuna. The high self is the "older utterly trustworthy parental sel of spirit." This higher self lives at a higher plane of consciousness outside of the physical body. It will not intervene in the affaires of life unless asked to do so. This is understood to be a cosmic law the high self must adhere to.

The high self has a higher form of mentation than the middle and low selves have. It is the part that direct dreams, intuitions, and premonitions through the subconscious self. Huna teaches that it is the high self that constructs your future form your thoughts, hopes, and fears of the middle and low selves.

The high self is supposed to be able to see into the future as far as your thoughts have been crystallized. As thoughts change daily in the lives of the middle and low selves, so does the future change, according to Huna teachings. Huna also teaches that communication with the high self occurs quite naturally during sleep. It is in that contact that most of the thoughts of the day are supposedly averaged by the high self and used, by some mysterious mechanism, to materialize conditions in your future.

Huna teachings say that each of the three selves has its proper role to perform in the life of each individual. Life, health, and happiness have to do with th integration, blending, and harmonizing of these three selves.

The other basic teaching of huna is that people are made up of ten basic elements. To understand this concept it os necessary to understand the triad of mind-force-matter. It is believed that the basic vital force, or energy, in a person's body is divided into three voltages. The lowest voltage is that of the lower, or sunconscious self. This same vital force when used by the middle self or conscious mind, is thought to be raised to a higher voltage. In the same way when the vital force is raised to the level of consciousness of the high self, it is raised again to an even higher voltage. The basic vital force of a person changes according to which self is using that energy.

The last element of this triad is that of matter. Huna teaches that each of the three selves has a shadow body, or etheric body. The shadow bodies are metaphysical bodies that are thought to be exact duplicates of everything that exists in the physical world. It is these energetic molds that hold all physical from together. Everything that has ever been created has a shadow body.

The shadow body of the low self is said to be a mold of every tissue of the physical body. The low self's shadow body hence looks like the physical body except that it is metaphysical in form. Huna teaches that all memory is stored in this shadow body of the low self. The shadow body of the middle self is an energy body in the region of the physical head. The low and middle selves, hence, interpenetrate the physical body with their shadow bodies.

The high self has a shadow body also, but it does not interpenetrate the physical body. The high self is connected to the low self by an energy cord. This energy cord has been called the silver cord in other mystical teachings.

I have so far mentioned nine elements. The tenth elements is the physical body, which is the vehicle, or instruments, in which the low self and middle self operate and live.

Huna teaches that the high self expresses all the divine qualities- compassion, patience, love, forgiveness. It is the ideal to which the middle self is to aspire. It is a step advanced in the mental powers and creative abilities. The high self is also considered to be a combined community of spirits. High selves are considered to be individual in identity and yet one with all other high selves at the same time. The high self is also considered to be a perfect blending of masculine and feminie, an androgynous self.

The shadow bodies of the three selves are made of a subtance called "aka". Aka has a sticky and elastic quality to it and can stretch without breaking. This substance is also a perfect carrier and conductor of vital force. According to Huna teachings, the lower self's shadow body is capable of changing shapes temporarily ot permanently to form a connecting thread between the middle self and the high self.

If you have a good relationship and a strong rapport with your low and high selves you have dedeloped these aka threads into aka cords. It is upon these aka threads and cords that vital force and thought forms travel.

Every time you contact your low self, your high self, any object, or any person in the world you are sending out aka threads. When contact is made between two persons, a long sticky thread is drawn between them. Further contact adds other aka threads, and they become braided together into an aka cord. Ana aka cord results in a strong rapport between the two individuals.

Telepathic communication, according to Huna, has to do with the traveling of vital force and thought forms along aka cords. This telepathic sending of thought forms and vital force can occur among the middle, low, and high selves, and between two people who have a strong aka cord connection.

Every thought you think has a shadow body around it, also. As a thought is formed it is fastened by a thread of aka to the thought threads that came before it. This concept is the explanation for the association of ideas which is acknowledged by modern psychology. In other words, a given thought attracts the threads of all similar thoughts.

Another extremely important aspect of Huna teaching is the importance of mana, or vital force. Mana is the basic energy in all things. Huna teaches that mana is taken from food and air by the low self and stored in the low self's shadow body. This vital force in the lower self's shadow body can be used for anything the middle self wants. When used by the middle self the mana is raised from the shadow body of the lower self to the physical head region of the middle self and in the process of being raised is changed in some subtle way. This force, when raised, is called the will by modern psychology. When the middle self does not use this will power as it should, the lower self acts out and flits from one activity to another without carrying out any suggestion or command effectively.

The low self is thought to be like a child. It needs to be loved, and it needs to be treated firmly and in a disciplined manner. A real physical child, if spoiled and not given any discipline will act out. It is the same with the lower self. That is why it is essential that the middle slef raise the mana for use as will power. The middle slef is te reasoning mind which is like the parent of the low self, jjust as the high self is the parent of the middle self. The three selves are gradations of conciousness.

The Kahunas believe that God is a triune being, just as people are triune beings. They believe that God is the trinity of levels of spirit. They term these three levels Ku, Kane, and Kanaloa. This concept of God correlates with that of other religions such as Christianity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), and Hinduism (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). The kahunas believe that the process of evolution is one of moving through these levels of consciousness back to eventually at-one-ment with God the Creator, or Ku.

Making prayers to the high self is similar to the process that is used between the low self and the middle self. Once the middle self has raised the vital force from the shadow body of the low self to use as will, it can do whatever it wants to do with that energy. Such will can be used for physical exercise or controlling the lower self or thinking or praying or anything else. This process of prayer to the high self involves raising the vutal force or mana, up from the middle self to the next voltage.
